  1. Fair enough, personal choice. Leds would be sealed units with their own earth return, not earthed to the tank itself and as one other mentioned, would not ignite even if a short occured which should have a fuse or circuit breaker inline anyway. Try dipping a match into cooking oil..nothing. Diesel is however more explosive than petrol. Petrol being an ether readily combines with oxygen creating an explosive vapour. Diesel will under considerable pressure explode...but you knew that anyway.
  2. This is what I am sure saved us, a cheap Chinese in line fuel filter. Our primary filter is totally clean so the this filter did the trick as it was clogged needing cleaning, engine losing power at times. Will treat the fuel we have and keep checking and cleaning this filter. Tanking the tank out now not an option!
  3. Nice bloke...you are full of joy Fishy!! Unfortunately I think you are right. Looked at the prefilter this morning and clean after 7hrs running. Another problem is trying to stop a fuel filter glass bowl from leaking. Can never get those bloody rubber seals to sit right in the glass bowl and not leak when done up. Any tricks? Here's a (silly?) idea. To kill the bug forever and never have to worry about getting it in the first place, build into tanks some UV leds! Hit the switch now and again and dead!
  4. Thanks Fish. Not what I wanted to read! We have a still on board...make our own rum so yes, I know what you are saying! It's not feasible to get the tank out but was thinking of looping a pump through the filler and output via a bucket to sluice the stuff out until clean. So, what causes this gunk to grow in a bloody fuel tank? We close the breather when out for winter so not sure how the tank generates water? Driven trucks for years and never had this.
  5. Noticed coming up the engine lost revs so suspected a fuel blockage, wasn't expecting to see the prefilter totally blocked with a brown sludge! We have a plastic tank so thought it wouldn't be prone to condensation ( Why doesn't this ever happen to trucks?). Seems I was very wrong. Easy enough to clean the filter, yet to check it after 7hrs running today but I am assuming it will need a clean again. We have used a bug killer last year but the 20lt container of diesel we added it to ended up with clumps of brown sh!t on the bottom. Is there anything that we can get that that will both kill and
  6. There are different variations of rubber so vulcanised stuff probably would be OK. Tugs and wharves use old car tyres and they seem to last for ever. Just be mindful of rafting up to others lovely shinny topsides!
  7. Rubber doesn't survive that well. Why not brass?
  8. Looking at the pulpit I think it's harpoon is missing but not for whales...
  9. A yacht with two bows cut off other keelers bolted on the side...aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrggggly!
  10. Yep, what I thought. Cheaper to get a cheap router but then there is the host software and I doubt anything is available. Digital Yacht has two apps that supposedly work with the usb port on the ait2000 using a otg conection but failed on my Samsung tablet. Thanks for the advice. Time to give up.
  11. The MFD already does that. No way to do it direct to the gofree wifi?
  12. Repeating data is what I am chasing Matt. It's a gateway to the mfd using "link", works well. What I was hoping to do was use the 2nd port to repeat AIS data from a USB source. I figure thats a long shot? (Anyone know a recipe for hammerhead shark? ...just caught one)
  13. Not sure Lat. It's designed to connect via wifi to a TCPIP server so will update software via the internet. Not sure if you can "surf" the net via a wifi smart phone. Should be possible using the gofree ip address. The plan is to convert the USB 2 output from our AIS to Ethernet. Can already see ais targets on the mfd and tablet via the gofree on wifi but when power is an issue, being able to just use the gofree would be great. Trouble will be getting the ethernet plugs that go into the gofree. I am sure they are proprietary to Navico. They were talking about extending the usefulness of the go
  14. Anyone managed to get a gofree WiFi to work with other Ethernet devices? It should but the admin password doesn't work to get in to the setup to get ports to work with other devices?
  15. The TP32 works very well. Ours comes up on the NSS7 EVO2 and is dead accurate under N2K from the GPS. Sails to wind too but a little slow on some changes. I think it's due to the NASA unit is only putting out the old 0183 sentences. When in light winds, about 15kts, works very well as the slow reaction dampens lots of unessary course changes. I would stay away from raymarine. Our experience is not good. Cheap and nasty.

I take it thats a yes. Went down this road about getting a cat1 in 2003 and there was no call for a para anchor which apart from the Pardeys saying how bad they are, saved me off Cape Turnagain. At leased they now consider them a must have.

Are para-anchor (not drogues) and correct warp now required for CAT1?

So...countries that have no such inspections have more deaths at sea and are dissadvantaged compared to us? Yes, it's not the 1900s, maybe mores the pitty as freedoms get eroded over time. You can not save everyone from themselves, idiots are just that but where is the harm in trying? Lots.

From a bucket!!?? (Why didn't I think of that....)

Yep, by the time you have loaded $30k of "safety" gear for your CAT1...theres no room for the skipper!!. Fair enough if you have crew aboard, their life is the skippers responsibility but what happened to the freedom of the sea? The right to make your own decision to embark on a voyage of (self?) discovery on your OWN? A single hander has had that removed by nanny state nz. You can not legally leave nz without an "exit visa" and without that, you can not legally enter another country so nz has the single hander by the short and expensive curlies until you pay lots and lots of money for junk yo

Or...single handers deserve what they get.

Why a throw line for a single hander...?
