  1. Oh dear, thats not what I read. Try receiving a mayday from a vessel when your no gps alarm goes off, right over the top. I removed my qualifications because I do know what I am talking about. It is a LEGAL requirement that class D marine VHF transceivers type approved for GMDSS and recreational to either be equiped with a GPS receiver OR have an external GPS position sent to them. It is also a legal requirement to have these transceivers emit an alarm at intervals when no position information is available. It is also a legal requirement that this alarm CAN NOT be user dissabled. Now, I've was

    Oh ROT!

Thanks! Will do if the yard doesn't do the job. Going to walk over now for the quote...
  4. Sorry kiwifish, are you saying I am an "uneducated operator"?
  5. True, you are no radio tech? Its a requirement that all VHF marine transceivers have a failed gps position alarm: ""Subject: UNIDEN Question Update : W400167-030915:: W400167-030915 To Thomas Date: Tuesday, March 10, 2015, 6:49 AM Our Solution: Thank you for using our system. Dear valued Uniden customer, Unfortunately, there is no way to disable the No GPS alarm. It is on there so that in case of distress, it would be able to broadcast your coordinates. Since it is considered a safety feature, it is unable to be disabled. Thank you for contacting Uniden!"" Rang Lusty Bl

Correct! Best dang boat yard pardner!! (Sorry loads of Americans in here at the moment..)

    Oh ROT!

Seems everyone of the same opinion? Evadure is not good? Waiting for a quote from the boat yard but if I go it alone, good advice in here. Thanks all. Speaking of boat repairs, thought you might like these taken this morning. Noel at it on 'Ruah' with Stockholm tar, copper sheeting and red lead! A shipwright at work!
  8. DSC radios are a pain in the arse and are infact DANGEROUS. Let me explain. DSC still has not been officially accepted in NZ so while CG might have it , its not to be relied upon. The worst is, if your radio does not have a GPS buit in or you don't supply it with position data, the bloody thing will sound a series of annoying beeps and will continue to do so at regular intervals until its gets a gps fix..RIGHT OVER ANY INCOMING TRANSMISSION! Thats right, whoever's talking to you gets wiped out, and they call that a safety feature! Forget watch keeping at night with that going. It can not be t

    Oh ROT!

Another note. No bolts. The stem plate was screwed in with ss countersunk screws which have obviously come lose over time and let water in. Same as Vic008, used to use sikaflex and simson does a better job but would need a sealant that doesnt dry out?

    Oh ROT!

Thanks guys! Lots to think about. I take it "West" is straight west system epoxy? I used everdure on our shaft log, was recommended with a fizzing gland and worked well. Timbers are kauri, dry and yes the pit is blind, if you look at the ply I ripped out, you can see the wedge that has been shaped to fit in there screwed to it. Reids built the hull 1966 in Whangarei for my granddad who did the rest, can't imagine he would use plywood but, it has lasted until now! Just checked it, a hot sunny day and drying out nicely. Dodged a bullet!!?

    Oh ROT!

I thought I might throw this one to the gurus. Decided to modify our bow roller and noticed moisture underneath. More exploration and found the stem head plate /bow roller had been mounted on bloody plywood! Her timbers underneath are not rotten and drying out nicely so will treat with everdure when dry. My question is, what to replace this ply with? Destroyed it getting it off as it was quite damp, probably rotten. Was thinking glass? Or should I get some kauri cut up to fit?
  12. Have been using "windy" and "weather watch", both very good. Metserv never been accurate since Bob McDavitt left! Its now crystal balls? Tarot cards, chicken entrails!!?
  13. 4 x head sheets!!?? ( or am I over sampling our hooch!!?)
  14. Up here the barnies are like bloody limpet mines! A big cat hauled out here today, barnies a lot less than us but still lots. Asked the skipper how long in the drink, 2 months! Jotun black on it.Now check this out. We had a little water getting into the deadwood ballast seam and use a product that refused to allow any antifoul to stick to it, so gave up and left it. When we hauled out in Opua, NOT A THING WAS STICKING TO IT! Slime yes, but no barnies. We decided to paint a test spot on the side of the keel and hauled out saturday and not a single barnie in it! Our dinghy spends a lot of time o
  15. Tried it, even heated it on then a second layer. Washed off then the barnies attacked.
  16. No, BOI and outer Whangarei Harbour (no where near Town Basin!!). Thats it. Nice 'clean' water. I noticed too that our propspeed put on by Chad at Opua also had barnacles around the base of the blades, some propspeed has even gone! Are we being had by all these 'wonderful' EXPENSIVE products? Propspeed only 3 months old! A slow revolution prop and its falling off!!!!??
  17. Anyone heard of a product called "Hempaguard X7 89900"? Up to 90 months protection!!!? Its for ships, doesnt appear on Hempels website for smaller boats and nothing for NZ? http://www.hempel.com/en/marine/solutions-by-brand-name/hempaguard
  18. Heres how it went. Hauled out at Opua to get a new windlass installed, a bloody good deal off Burnsco. Went to Caters who incidentally we will never go back there again who said you should never antifoul over a transducer, something about a reaction with the plastic, but "use this amazing product" or words to that effect. We knew Opua is the worlds breeding ground for barnacles so soon as we were back in the drink out to Jacks and other bays then back to Whangarei Harbour, a week in Marsden Cove then extended stays in Urquharts Bay, so a LOT of moving about. In 3 months, transducer is covered!
  19. A picture is worth a thousand barnacles!!! Bought it off Cater Marine: "this is what you need mate!". Only THREE MONTHS and cost $28! Anyone else used this crap?
  20. OK, been told we shouldn't have used Vivid, its no good. Need to use a very 'soft' ablative? Any suggestions?
  21. Will post a pic soon, but just hauled out at Norsand yesterday and WTF!!? We were given a half tin of vivid, a semi ablative and rolled it on December. Hauled put Opua to put in a new winch and touched up where it looked too thin ( they say put it on thin) then hauled out yesterday. Either side of the keel almost clean but the underside, an octopusses garden! Even a goose barnicle on the stern. Loads of little barnicles. Why? We left Opua same day we went back in and probably spent 2 weeks in Marsden Cove which is equally notorious for fowling (incidentally, they have given up fighting fan wor
  22. Got a Dixon. Trouble is, it burns the crusts before it actually toasts the bread because they are a upright type and the crust sits on a ledge that gets hotter than anything else so you are forever rotating the bread to avoid charcoal.
  23. Sorry, I probably meant more personal experience than advice. Incidentally, we think our anchor buddy reached bottom on a low tide and rolled so painter rapped around the warp, quite a mess! We lost as in someone (believe it or not) picked up our CQR and chain in Mussel Bay one night, undid the shackle and made off with it leaving us adrift, a story for another time? I was always pleased with it, held well but best of all, it set quickly, ideal for crowded achorages which Mussel Bay was at the time. The supreme is a great anchor but..BUT at times you wonder if it will ever bite in! We are chai
