Just back from 12 days out.

Original intent was Gt Barrier, but the weather gods decreed two weeks of windless conditions.  So we lazily toured the islands and anchorages available around Coromandel.  We didn't regret it.

Stops included Te Kouma, Woolshed Bay and Deep Cove on Whanganui Island, Waimate Island, Moturua Island, Motuwi Island, and Happy Jack.

Apart from Te Kouma and Chamberlain's on our last night, we had a maximum of 3 boats in sight each evening.  Deep Cove we had to ourselves for 3 days.

Along the way we had encounters with dolphins, orca, a number of hammerhead juveniles, and a large unidentified shark that jumped and barrel rolled 10m off us at Motuwi and put us off swimming for the afternoon.

We were gifted and delivered fresh snapper by some gnarly old guys fishing in a mussel farm one morning, and we had brilliant if windless conditions the whole time.

130 litres of water, 30 litres of diesel, 3 litres of Kero, 2 dozen beers, 12 assorted wines, a bottle of port, 2 bags of coffee, and far too much food kept the yacht and us going.

And we worked out we need something a little bigger than a Sarabande for comfort.

I can thoroughly recommend an Elliott 1050 - there’s one on trademe at the moment!

I suppose nobody would have a bosuns chair handy at Home Bay, Rotoroa?

We had a shroud cover kindly land on deck today and it's a few more days till we get back to westhaven...

I’ve got a full body harness on board. Currently in Huruhi Bay. If you want it your welcome to pick it up.

True that. After we got away from the park up at the start we had a good sail up to Kawau, boat loping along just as it did 45 odd years ago with wind a little forward of the beam. We had been watching what was happening ahead and Predictwind was telling us that when we got to Cape Brett (4.00am-ish) we could expect wind in the high 20s with gusts in the high 30s and rain. We also new that there would be a big confused sea running as it had been blowing easterly for some time. And so ... four guys with average ages closer to 70 than 60, after much discussion, said: "You know what, we have no need to prove anything to anyone, why would we put ourselves through this, we are here for the fun and this will not be fun." So we dived into Kawau Bay, had a hot meal with a bottle of red (Elephant Hill) and had a lazy sail back to Westhaven. Ended up have a great, albeit expensive, day sailing.

We are very pleased with where we have got to with the boat and have every confidence that the boat would not have been an issue had we carried on. The challenge for us now is get out and use it over summer.

Then we woke up on Sunday to some very very sad news ....

Good call, and sounds like a good day out.

Used a lot of it last year during our 1020 refit.

Key to no bubbles is getting your thinning ratios right for your chosen application, temperature and relative humidity. To get your UV stability, reduce long term chalking of the coating etc you should be adding 15-20% durepox high performance gloss into your white/ black/ whatever durepox colour you have (unless it's below the water line, then I'm not sure).

In regards to what Guest said about the tape tearing the paint, it really depends on what tape type using. It surprises me how few people are using the more modern Washi tapes (rice paper tape), and continue to use crepe paper or vinyl tapes from the likes of 3M or Scotch or similar. There's good quality washi tapes available that have wax polymer coatings on them meaning the paint won't stick to it, while leaving razor sharp lines when you remove it. I've moved a few guys onto it down at our local club with a boat builder now buying it by the box full. It'll change your life🤣

Where can you the Washi tapes from?

They aren't building Penlink just so they can cancel the ferry service. To think so is naïve.

I think you will find that AT can't handle the ferry operator. But there are loads of bus operators so they are easier to push around. Hence AT want buses.

I didn’t say they were building it to shut the ferry down - but completion of Penlink is the rationale for ending the ferry  service. So it’s not a naive statement

  6. Auckland is surrounded by water which is essentially free transport infrastructure - future transport planning needs to factor this in and look toward developing a comprehensive ferry service from a range of points around the city. Replacing a ferry service by building a new road (pen link) is just dopey.

    Surely not Rudolph shack !?

Definitely not Rudolph. He said that he used to have a bit to do with the boat back in its day - knew some of the sailors. He had been trying to buy it for some time and had a couple of court cases in the process. Seemed very enthusiastic.

  8. I spoke to the guy who bought is when it was about to go back in the water. He said he planned to take it up to the Mahurangi where he had some land and was going to haul it out up there and work on it.

  9. We’re back at Gulf Harbour. Quite a few others coming back in today from either Rakino of Coromandel with a few hairy rides in the easterly swell. I’ve got more leave in February so fingers crossed for some settled weather.
