I installed a $15 Ali express 2 channel RF remote for the windlass as a back up because the foot switches have failed twice.

Is it tricky to wire in? - does the sender have to be wired to the winch itself or can it be attached to a switch?

  2. So at last years insurance renewal the insurance company wanted us to obtain an out of water condition report, and rig check. The rig check could supposedly be a visual from the deck but of course ne rigger will put their name to that so we got a proper rig check. We have the report back and it’s mostly all good, however it does contain the following phrase:

“Note that Stainless Steel Wire Rigging conventionally has a maximum design life of 15 years.”

Does the average cruising yachtsman change their standing rigging every 10 - 15 years? I’m hoping that the insurance company doesn’t require it anytime soon - rough estimate is 12k……

  3. Just being nosy, but there has been a large yacht anchored at either Manly Beach or Matakatia Bay for quite a few months now so seems to be a reasonably permanent arrangement. Does anyone know what the deal is? We were wondering if it’s someone who’s given up on the constant outgoing of insurance condition reports, cost of insurance etc and given up on marina life?

Or maybe someone having an awesome extended cruise / livaboard…..

Are you supposed to paint the end. Some units recommend not antifouling unless water based antifoul I seem to recall.

The one in the picture is the blank plug. The transducer itself is clean - but just doesn’t work anymore

  5. Hi all - does anyone have one these lying around that they don’t need? - mine seems to have given up the ghost and I just get a zero depth reading on the displays.
‘it’s the round type one - 30mm across as in the photos.

    cheers

For some reason I don't follow, the value of the berths is not really added to the house values in the village, and we have even had lawyers tell prospective buyers not to buy here as the berths have annual fees! With that, though, I'd also say, you DONT own the berth, you just get a license to occupy while you own the property...

But you have basically the same rights as if you did own it - you can rent it out etc, to all intents and purposes its yours...

@Island TimeIT - what are the body corp fees for the apartment like where you are?

  7. Got this last week from GH Marina:

Important Notice Regarding Proposed Marina Development

    Dear Berth Holders,

We hope you are all doing well!

We would like to notify you of significant information that has recently been brought to our attention as the Manager of the Gulf Harbour Marina Scheme.

We have been advised by Hopper Developments Limited that they are intending to lodge an application for fast-track approval for a 300 Berth marina and public boat ramp, which are planned to be constructed next to the entrance channel to Gulf Harbour Marina and opposite the ferry terminal.

We have very limited knowledge of the application at this point and are seeking further information and advice on this. We have also informed the Statutory Supervisor of the Gulf Harbour Marina Scheme, Trustees Executors Limited.

Hopper Developments have asked for our support on their submission amongst others. We have advised them we cannot support something with minimal consultation or information but feel you as berth holders should be kept informed.

We will continue to keep you updated as we find out more information.

Below is a map of the proposed marina, which we received from Hopper Developments Limited.

    Kind regards,

The team at Gulf Harbour Marina

Presumably there's water at the new marina now?

I asked about that in January this year - the response from the marina manager was that they didn’t have potable water available yet - it was on the ‘to do list’

Just back from 12 days out.

Original intent was Gt Barrier, but the weather gods decreed two weeks of windless conditions.  So we lazily toured the islands and anchorages available around Coromandel.  We didn't regret it.

Stops included Te Kouma, Woolshed Bay and Deep Cove on Whanganui Island, Waimate Island, Moturua Island, Motuwi Island, and Happy Jack.

Apart from Te Kouma and Chamberlain's on our last night, we had a maximum of 3 boats in sight each evening.  Deep Cove we had to ourselves for 3 days.

Along the way we had encounters with dolphins, orca, a number of hammerhead juveniles, and a large unidentified shark that jumped and barrel rolled 10m off us at Motuwi and put us off swimming for the afternoon.

We were gifted and delivered fresh snapper by some gnarly old guys fishing in a mussel farm one morning, and we had brilliant if windless conditions the whole time.

130 litres of water, 30 litres of diesel, 3 litres of Kero, 2 dozen beers, 12 assorted wines, a bottle of port, 2 bags of coffee, and far too much food kept the yacht and us going.

And we worked out we need something a little bigger than a Sarabande for comfort.

I can thoroughly recommend an Elliott 1050 - there’s one on trademe at the moment!

I suppose nobody would have a bosuns chair handy at Home Bay, Rotoroa?

We had a shroud cover kindly land on deck today and it's a few more days till we get back to westhaven...

I’ve got a full body harness on board. Currently in Huruhi Bay. If you want it your welcome to pick it up.

True that. After we got away from the park up at the start we had a good sail up to Kawau, boat loping along just as it did 45 odd years ago with wind a little forward of the beam. We had been watching what was happening ahead and Predictwind was telling us that when we got to Cape Brett (4.00am-ish) we could expect wind in the high 20s with gusts in the high 30s and rain. We also new that there would be a big confused sea running as it had been blowing easterly for some time. And so ... four guys with average ages closer to 70 than 60, after much discussion, said: "You know what, we have no need to prove anything to anyone, why would we put ourselves through this, we are here for the fun and this will not be fun." So we dived into Kawau Bay, had a hot meal with a bottle of red (Elephant Hill) and had a lazy sail back to Westhaven. Ended up have a great, albeit expensive, day sailing.

We are very pleased with where we have got to with the boat and have every confidence that the boat would not have been an issue had we carried on. The challenge for us now is get out and use it over summer.

Then we woke up on Sunday to some very very sad news ....

Good call, and sounds like a good day out.

Used a lot of it last year during our 1020 refit.

Key to no bubbles is getting your thinning ratios right for your chosen application, temperature and relative humidity. To get your UV stability, reduce long term chalking of the coating etc you should be adding 15-20% durepox high performance gloss into your white/ black/ whatever durepox colour you have (unless it's below the water line, then I'm not sure).

In regards to what Guest said about the tape tearing the paint, it really depends on what tape type using. It surprises me how few people are using the more modern Washi tapes (rice paper tape), and continue to use crepe paper or vinyl tapes from the likes of 3M or Scotch or similar. There's good quality washi tapes available that have wax polymer coatings on them meaning the paint won't stick to it, while leaving razor sharp lines when you remove it. I've moved a few guys onto it down at our local club with a boat builder now buying it by the box full. It'll change your life🤣

Where can you the Washi tapes from?
