  1. Yep the range is crap compared to a diesel. It all depends what I can live with. You pays yer money and makes yer choice I guess... I think the 2 hour range is at full throttle...if you go half that, i.e about 3 knots, then you can travel many more hours before the batteries crap out
  2. A 205 watt hard panel, 24v, measujres 1581×809×40mm from a particular local retailer. I'm thinking of something similar to what you see aft on the boat in this pic
  3. As opposed to inboard electric engines, outboards electric engines are not cost prohibitive to me, such as the Toqeedo 2R with remote control. http://www.torqeedo.com/en/products/outboards/cruise/cruise-2.0-r/M-1230-00.html If I l got one I would i'd want to keep the 24 volt system, required for the e-outboard, separate from the 12V house system. The solar panels for the house system are going to be flexible and mounted on deck and / or coachroof. My boat is only 26 foot, so I don't have a lot of room for panels other than the 12v flexible solar panels on deck and coach-roof for the
  4. Well, I just worked out a near esstimate cost of getting the electric engine, the freight, and customs...it is no longer viable. The cost was astronomical. So, am keeping the diesel unless I find $19K under my pillow all of a sudden from the tooth ferry. Looks like I am going to be a diesel powered yacht for some time to come -- I do believe in the idea though. It's just a pity that NZ is so far away and to get anything down here costs an arm and a leg, plus the exchange rate is currently a bit shitty. Oh well...
  5. Hi, As I am becoming increasingly a bit of a greenie, I am considering changing to an electric inboard motor, which would mean no need for the Beta 14hp that came with the yacht I recently purchased. So, I am putting the 'feelers' out there to see if anyone whom reads this board is interested in a top quality diesel engine. It's only had somewhere between 60-80 hours use, and I just had it serviced a couple weeks ago with no issues apart from routine maintenance stuff. The diesel was purchased new from 'The Engine Room' in 2010 (whom also did the service mentioned above) but not
  6. For dumbasses like me, you mean: Motor forward, cleat / bollard off when 'up and down', slowly motor forward again, anchor then frees (hopefully) and THEN use your electric winch. Right?
  7. This is good to hear, as I have purchased a S/Excell off KM too, but am yet to use it in anger - but seems like it is living up to it's billing as one of, if not 'the' best out there.

    Interior Paint?

Not sure I want a glossy interior, but...might use it for my decks! "Being a POR 15 moisture cured topcoat makes it ideally suited to all marine uses from decks to engine rooms."

    Interior Paint?

Mind you, a few cans of this Rust-o-leum stuff might do the trick, as a lot of my interior has carpet lining...or whatever the heck it is called, on the cabin sides, so it really is just the bulk-heads, wet-locker, and the cabin roof -- and she is only a 26 footer. Am yet to decide whether to install headlining on the cabin roof to help with condensation in winter. 10 cans of this http://www.bunnings.co.nz/rust-oleum-2x-ultra-cover-340g-satin-heirloom-white_p00265641 = probably equal what you would pay for a can of paint, and being an inherently lazy bast*rd, the idea of spraying away in

    Interior Paint?

What about the gloss versus satin / low sheen thing? I don't have enough experience to know -- but is a freshly painted high-gloss down below too glary?

    Interior Paint?

Thanks wheels. I have the whole interior to paint,

    Interior Paint?

Oh, and low sheen, or semi-gloss for the interior?

    Interior Paint?

Whats the consensus on interior paint for cabin of a GRP sailboat? Will exterior Housepaint acrylics do ok as an interior paint? I was thinking of Dulux weathershield or similar, with a suitable primer / undercoat. I can buy 4 litres of that compared to the marine enamels of same quantity. Thoughts?
  14. Westhaven And if I remember the type of boat you have, full keel, med-heavy displacement 26 footer?, then what I have on offer might be suitable as my boat is similar. PM or ph / text me if you want to take a close up look.

    Half Moon Bay

I spent some time at HMB last year, both in the water and on the hard. Easily the friendliest, most helpful bunch of marina staff I have come across.

  18. I am vacating berth that I am renting from berth owner. Its on the Breakwater. Power, Water, Key for free parking etc. $450 per month.
  19. They can stik a red hot poker where the sun don't shine. I have been told the cost of reg part B was a little over $200 a decade ago. There is NO justification for a 500% increase in that time. Even inflation at it's worst has been well under double digits. Just don't pay it. Fly another flag,
  20. What difference is it how long the outboard leg is?
  21. I want to go to sea. I am not 'running away' from anything.
  22. ...or $80 per week. It's on the Breakwater and has power water etc. Only catch is that it is short term. I am subleasing the berth off the owner, but I don't need it while I am hauled out for at least 6 weeks from now, maybe even 8-10 weeks. Depends how long my refit takes.
  23. My experience with the marine industry in this country has been nothing short of diabolical. As a small boat owner my impression is those in the industry don't give a f*ck. As someone wrote above, they hate quoting small jobs. However, as an exception to the rule, I got to say KM's outfit have been bloody excellent. Ummm...how much for that Sarca Exell again Grant? heh heh
