At the risk of this becoming an Inboard Diesel v Outboard on small yachts thread, I will list off a few reasons off the top of my head in no particular order: 1) My ultimate aim with this boat is to have no holes below the waterline - obviously that can't be achieved with a raw water cooled inboard. 2) By having no thru-hulls the maintenance of said thru-hulls (which catastrophic failure can lead to disaster) becomes a non-issue - because I won't have any to maintain. 2) The diesel smell - I really don't like it. 3) My boat is a long keeler. A decent tiller controlled outboard will give m

You just described Donald Trump. Weird thing is, I agree with the Orange Orangutan about the TPP trade deal, even if I know he only is against it for his own BS reasons.

Mind you, some of the worst customer service on the phone I have ever had has been courtesy of "home-grown" workers. At least the Asian call centre workers are eager to help you, even if you may need to convert the pidgin english into some form you can understand.
-
Slight thread drift, but call centres full of asians are the result of globalisation and free trade that allows western companies to shift these operations overseas (or bring in cheap workers in as the case may be), to cut costs dramatically by paying low cost workers to do all the jobs "home-grown" (can't think of a better term at the moment) people used to do. Blame greedy companies who lobby politicians with election donations, who then pay back those greedy companies by signing up free trade deals and other favours.

Thanks TL. I've been told this shaft, prop and all the crap that goes with an inboard engine can add up to mouthwatering sum. I won't be putting it on a $1 reserve unless I am still trying to sell this gear a year from now. No rush to sell. Was just really looking for a guide price to give me a ballpark idea, but of course understand the old story something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay.

From a 26 foot long keel yacht. I will attach some pics. One sec....

Fellas, I am having my inboard engine pulled out next week. I intend to sell the engine, gearbox and electrical panel as one package. And I have a price in mind. But how much is all the other stuff worth - such as prop-shaft, stuffing box, fixed three blade prop etc? I'm getting all that stuff taken out too, and will sell off in another package, but haven't really got an idea what it is worth. The engine and the stuff that goes with it is from year 2010.

Ah no, because as my post previous to yours says, I sold it and all other rigging in January. However, I do have a near new 14 hp Beta diesel engine that I want to sell - perfect inboard for a H28. Details and pics here http://crew.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic/13178-diesel-engine-for-sale-14hp-beta-year-2010/

I can report that the UK dealer will sell me the manual 9.9 HT with tiller and ship it direct to me - as long as I pay the freight of course.
-
My boat is a full keel, with barn door rudder off the transom. so yes, hopefully the outboard tiller will help with close quarters manoeuvring in marinas and the like
-
And to prove you are 100% correct VP, here is 9.9, hi-thrust, manual start with tiller http://www.bhg-marine.co.uk/yamaha-ft99lmhx-99hp-high-thrust-extra-long-shaft-outboard-446-p.asp but, in the UK NZ always seems to have less choice of everything huh.
-
Ah, interesting. The Yam dealer said not only can they not get a manual start off the shelf here in NZ (which I would prefer) but they would have to get the parts in to make it a tiller control rather than remote. The non-hi thrust in 9.9 with standard gear reduction has both manual and tiller, but the only option in NZ for hi-thrust model is electric start and remote if you buy off the shelf. So, maybe this is the way to go, get a special order done and get the hi-thrust with manual start & tiller and save all the effing around with batteries and parts for a tiller conversion. Thanks

Actually, a quick search (if sailboat data is to be believed) shows your R930 actually is less displacement than my 26 footer by around 500lbs. Yes the 9.9 is probably overkill, but it should get me home for work on Monday if I have to punch into some nasty sh*t. If I were cruising full time I'd consider a 6 hp with hi-thrust prop, and enjoy the lighter weight, and put up with the less power and less smooth single cylinder rat-atat-tat.

Yeah, me too Grant. I'll be getting a certified marine electrician to wire up my boat. Otherwise....
-
I am removing my inboard engine soon and swapping over to outboard motor on my 26 foot yacht, and I am just about set on on either a Tohatsu 9.8hp four-stroke, or a Yamaha T9.9 Hi-thrust, The Yamaha Hi-thrust comes only with electric start. Never having owned or used an electric start outboard I have a few questions: 1) Does it needs its own 'starter' battery? And if so, is starting it up and motoring in and out of a marina or mooring enough to recharge it for next, or does it need to be wired into the house system to keep it topped up, especially when you don't happened to use the outboar

I have no doubt whatsoever they indeed did say to each other "hey lets all charge X and promise not to undercut, so we can all rip off these yachties.". The simultaneous price hikes in Marinas around Auckland bear that out.

I see Pine Harbour are wanting $645 p/mth for a 10.5m berth. Holy sh*t. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/marina-berths/auction-1172846734.htm I think it was KM who earlier in this thread the said the Marina owners recently got together. Doesn't that break some sort of commerce or anti competitiveness Laws? And I don't reckon you should be able to own more than one marina due to those anti competitive laws. The guy that owns Hobsonville also owns Bayswater as an example. Or does being anti competitive with ability to screw the public with serious price hikes - despite

I recall reading one of Andrew Fagan's books, and I think he did just this - to Sunday (Raoul?) Island and back I think.

We are talking the Herald here, a once very good News Paper, that now has articles like a spat on some NZ House Brides crapiola Reality TV shyte, as its lead story! They've come a long way baby, and not a good way.
-
Hah new spectacles needed for me then! The French hitch hiker guy was just being French I guess.
-
The Herald made sure they kept the beer bottle in the pic of him they used - obviously to reinforce the thrust of their story which is that he is an "irresponsible yahoo".

Actually, a bit of quick searching on T/Me and I come up with the below: a 12m rental, advertised by the marina at $660 pm!! - why would anyone pay that amount for a 12m berth a dingey marina miles up the harbour? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/marina-berths/auction-1060875005.htm $555 for a 10.5 at H/Ville again advertised by the marina themselves http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/marina-berths/auction-1060874455.htm and a private rental at 380 per month for the same size berth - which is prob what the opex is. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors
