  1. The PHRF requirement is a bit of a strange one if trying to build a large spectacle race? And Its not clear yet what the $100 to $150 entry covers, but if its just the race, might be a bit steep for some.

i dont want to sound negative, the concept looks great fun.

  2. Great report, thanks.

On that last point, I've done the 350, and the white island race, enjoyed them a lot. However, with the stance that RAYC took re the landing closure, I’ll not be entering any more of their races. Why support a ‘sailing’ club that doesn't support all the requirements of sailing

Unbelievable, the RAYC Commodore then gave a presentation about why they want the yard closed, including requesting they would like the lease the land for storage. This is from the self proclaimed "Premier Blue Water yacht club of New Zealand." The RAYC presentation was followed by similar one from the Akarana Marine Sports Trust supporting closing the yard.

Such a short sighted, ridiculous point of view.  I cannot believe that is supported by many of the sailors who are (well, if were me, WERE) members.

I'm honestly stunned that RAYC does not want to support big boat sailing anymore.  To be fair, the last event I saw was wind warriors, they don't need much hard stand space for maintenance I suppose.

I’m sure you don’t mean this Clipper but the logical inference of your comment is that you think we should do away with car licensing and registration …

Haha, yeah, nah, not what I meant.

I agree with khayyam that actually enforcing our existing rules might be a good start.

doesn't work to acheive what?  Where?  Under what circumstances?

I agree that badly drafted law and poor enforcement may lead to poor outcomes.  Also, legislation and regulation is not the 100% cure - education, social pressure, the power of insurance companies to require proof, all contribute.

But every year we see posts like the op - a constant stream of complaints about poor boat-handling, navigation, colregs compliance, harbour bylaw compliance.  Just as there is a claim that legislating licincing and registration don't work, its obivious the status quo is not working either.

Driven a car lately? They are Licensed and registered.

    Still bloody idiots everywhere.

    And crashes

  7. Its not like its a race with one of the biggest fleets each year.

    Oh wait. Nevermind.

maybe they are too busy planning a kiwi defence of the Americas Cup

    Oh. Wait. Nevermind…..

A little update on this topic, I spoke to a marine sparky recently who said that he had fitted quite a few drop ins quite successfully provided a quality external regulator was used (around $600) and he mentioned about 1300 for a 100 a/h battery so sounds like good quality but obviously this is a very basic system. Still we are talking close to 2k and given that using my existing system with a carbon foam LA was only $450. Its confirms that lithium is not quite there yet for me anyway.

So a mate has this setup which is way, way above my pay grade!
