National Advisory: Tsunami - Potential threat to New Zealand Cancellation

Strong and unpredicable currents may still occur

________________________________________

No: 02

________________________________________

Issued at 0950 hours on 13.04.14 Issued by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM).

Tsunami advisory cancelled:

The tsunami experts panel (TEP) has convened and they are advising that there is not likely to be a tsunami threat for New Zealand. This is based on the revised magnitude (Mw 7.6), and depth of the earthquake. Some caution will still have to be given regarding potentially strong, unpredictable currents around coastal areas of New Zealand. This includes areas around the northwest part of the North Island, and based on past experience along the west coast of the South Island (e.g. Greymouth, Westport). Travel times to the northern end of the North Island are approximately 4 hours, and to the west coast of the South Island approximately 6 hours. We strongly advise caution over the next 24-48 hours.

The correct time is 2015Z ... thats UTC Universal Time or Greenwich etc (12 hours out with us). Some one in MCDEM got the conversion to local wrong it appears.

#SolomonsTsunami Advisory-2

The Tsunami Expert Panel has advised the Ministry that with the Solomons earthquake downgraded to 7.6 there is now no tsunami threat to New Zealand.

However, people should expect stronger and unusual currents on the coast, especially in harbours or estuaries.

People in boats or at the beach, should be particularly careful. The stronger and unusual currents are likely to last all day.

Looks like more unusual currents an tides this afternoon/evening. Travel time is about 4-6 hours from the Solomons. May be an interesting afternoon getting back in a berth.
