johnMi 2
I am looking for a device I can temporarily fit onto the top of one of my sheet winches to automatically raise my main. The mainsail has a bolt rope, and it becomes quite tiring to winch up by hand. If there's nothing around I will try to design one. Maybe a winch handle that you hold in one place and a small motor to turn the winch.

Island Time 1,239
As you can see, there are several options. A right angle drill http://www.ebay.com/itm/Milwaukee-Cordless-M28-1-2-Inch-Right-Angle-Drill-0721-20-/161239455940?pt=AU_Power_Tools&hash=item258a9ed8c4, and one of these http://winchbit.com/ can/might be a lower cost option. They work well....
TimB 7
Hi john, I crewed on a F8.2R for two years out of Perth (called Redshift), and we never for a moment considered the need for an electric halyard winch. There must be something wrong, either the bolt rope is too big for the mast groove (or vice versa). We used to pull it 90% of the way up by hand and just winch the last 1/2 metre or so. By the way if you are barrelling downwind with gennnaker up, yes it can be a good move to pull a reef in the main, it really gives you back some control and removes the danger of tipping over frontwards. Also resist the temptation to ease the gennaker sheet, dump the main, leaving the gennaker sheeted on so it pulls upwards, let the tack out about 500mm or so helps with this.
