Great idea. Especially if you are rescuing someone form a fixed platform like a Dock/Wharf. But I also see an advantage for 2 crew if one goes over and the other may not be experienced enough to bring the boat back around. 
If it were me in the water, I may want to do a couple of laps before rescue

I think it looks like a good concept, and expect that if you had a little practice in the use of it prior to needing to use it, you could make for a far easier retrieval of a soggy crewmember. 

 

Also looks like a toy that could be great fun and therefore flat when you needed to use it though

 

I wonder if it has a beacon and local controls on it? We always insist on crew wearing waterproof torches in the dark - so we can see them. But if the lifebouy is not equipped with a beacon you might just lose it?

Surely it just needs a homing device and a "return to mother ship function" - then you wouldn't even need to suspend racing!

Brilliant Idea. Perhaps the remote would be better with the person in the water. With a homing device that takes it to the swimmer and back like Scottie half says
