erice 732
The rescue co-ordination centre said the Orion spotted the yacht this morning. It had made contact with the skipper who was said to be okay. The yacht's helm had broken in high seas, crippling the vessel which could no longer be steered. A cargo ship has now been diverted to rescue the man and was estimated to arrive at the mid-ocean rendezvous on Saturday morning. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11838330 He left Auckland on March 18 and planned to return to Poland around Cape Horn, Southern America. erice 732
looks like popping the epirb to call a mechanic is a no go A stricken solo yachtsman in distress has been plucked to safety by a cargo ship off the New Zealand coastline. The 64-year-old Polish man was reluctant to leave his yacht when the ship, Key Opus, arrived on the scene after the man's yacht suffered steering failure 2,700km east of New Zealand. The Rescue Coordination Centre contacted the New Zealand Defence Force to organise an Air Force P3K2 Orion to fly from New Zealand to the yacht with a Polish speaker onboard to convince him to be rescued. "The fact it took two full days of sailing for the Key Opus to reach the man's position underscores the remoteness of this rescue," Wilson said. The man is now being taken to Chile http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11839310
erice 732
ruskie chick calls home by mistake? Mikhailov was found safe and uninjured around 3.30pm, Metcalfe said. "It is encouraging that the woman in this instance was carrying a device which could help her to raise the alarm if she ran into trouble and we're glad in this instance she was OK." Metcalfe said police do however recommend that people spend time to ensure they know how to use their devices before setting out on a tramp. https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/northland/97264427/rescuers-help-track-down-tourist-after-desperate-facebook-plea-from-mum-in-russia

Dambo 44
I wonder why he could not make a rudder with the pole an floor board maby Because it's a nice idea in theory. I know people who have tried this method on relatively small boats (8.7m 9.2m) unsuccessfully. A large steel boat? Nope.
Myjane 40
I suppose it's in the lever action ,if to much is out the back it's hard to steer or may require many hands
