Best options for 3rd party insurance

Recommended Posts

So my partner and I have just bought a  60 year old wooden yacht that we’re planning to restore. Paid next to nothing for it so we’re not bothered about getting comprehensive insurance right now (from what I’ve read it would be virtually impossible to insure it anyway), but we’d like to get some third party insurance as we’re going to be moving it between a swing mooring and a marina. So far the only 3rd party only policy we’ve been able to find requires a condition report from a boat builder. The boat has a least one soft spot in the hull and maybe more that we haven’t found yet and we’re concerned we could end up paying for a report and still end up not being able to insure it. The previous owner had it insured under an umbrella policy but that’s not an option for us as the only other insurance thing we have is a car also with 3rd party. Does anyone know of any options that might be available to us?

As above but you will still need a condition report. Bare in mind your boat doesn't have to be perfect to get insurance.

Aaron from Marine Inspection Services is really good if you get a report. Based in Thames but covers at least Tauranga to Auckland. $10 per foot if I recall correctly. Let me know if you want his number.
