Read Hiscock. " be out of the Caribbean before the hurricane season. "

And the seawater temps seem to be breeding stronger, faster forming,  more intense ones, especially in that neck of the woods.

Was in the Caribbean post Hugo, on St Croix you didn't have birds chirping  a month later.

Got caught in Nantucket when Bob blew through, good prep removal of sails,  lines doubled,  every anchor out and allowing for the change in direction after the eye passed over.

I did not stay on the boat, there was 70' sailboats heeling 25 degrees at the docks, and the harbour looked like a bowling alley the following morning, we were lucky.

Was in Ft Lauderdale when Andrew went through, got sick and tired of prepping boats for hurricanes about three named ones after that,  got out and haven't been back.

I hear just about every major insurer has given up on Florida.

The above vid should be shown to every sailor contemplating parking in the mangroves and riding things out on board.

A lot of his issue was, as is common, other boats. There is no safety in numbers! Tough to find when the "hurricane holes" are crowded... IMO don't stay in the hurricane/Cyclone zones in season, move on with a month or so to spare - the seasons are expanding...

Ever wonder why insurance keeps going up?

Rats, we left Ft Lauderdale 12 months ahead of Andrew.  But went back to Central America just after Mitch. The destruction was "total ".

Yep the devastation post event is mind blowing, think its only a matter of time before one takes out a larger built up city with skyscrapers and the like especially east coast of Florida and further north, that for sure will not be pretty.

Ft Lauderdale was a good place from a Marine logistics and support point of view, the network of canals and the intercoastal was fascinating but the State seemed to attract a disproportionate amount of liars, thieves and vagabonds- by the end I was glad to get out.
