  1. Thanks Knot me. Good advice mate. We are chain warp (60m 14mm plait 15m 8mm short link). Worked well with the old CQR (someone nicked it!) but as you say supremes is a pain at times. I think the angle of the roller is too steep so adding a second at a lower angle and projecting out further will roll the anchor over? Thinking of getting a plate welded to the old bow roller and bolting another under it? Another issue just discovered this morning is our 'new' (second hand from Jack Stanley) anchor buddy raps itself around the warp! Why?
  2. Thanks Wheels. I am tempted to get a 100ah lead crystal battery. 18 years, rapid charge, seems to good to be true but the price! I realise bulk charging requires a bit but we have a 120 amp alternator, just thinking aloud.
  3. A wine in hand fishing and watching this massive thing cruise through past us and Chieftain expecting all the crew leaping about dousing sails, just one on deck! OK, she was under motor then but anchored with ease. Shes OK in our book.
  4. Very impressed!!! Not much room but a massive fancy painted schooner just popped in to Uquharts Bay, a woman? By her self? and expertly dropped anchor with no trouble at all. Anyone know this colossal yacht?
  5. CH That battery is 54watthours, For perspective that's the same amount of juice you have in 5-6 cellphones, It's benifit is the fact it can dump what little juice is had in a 114kw burst which is about 20 households average peak power usage I did electronics (a radio tech and amateur) worked on high (120kw) transmitters for the ABC and never heard of any device that can output, burst or otherwise, 114,000 watts when its capacity is only 54 watts! If so, theyve cracked it!!!!
  6. Looks like they have done it? http://www.cooperindustries.com/content/public/en/bussmann/electronics/products/eaton-supercapacitors/modules/xlr-module.html
  7. So, is that yes they are basically the same battery design or totally different? Sorry, a bit confused Wheels. I know the only comparrisons on the net are with SLA or AGM which isn't that hard to beat so I am assuming lead crystal, carbon and silicon are all the same? Lead carbon seem to be cheaper to buy.l Haha, yep. I remember years ago a guy on tv :" this will revolusionise the motor industry!" and started an engine that wont wear out, needs no oil and half the weight of a conventional engine...ceramics! Why didnt it catch on!? Turns out to cast and kiln the components to an accurate size
  8. A question (searching the net, no answer). I looked up lead crystal only to find there are others. Lead carbon and lead silicon too. Are they all the same? Which one best for a boating situation?
  9. , I and around 30 boats I know of in NZ have and are using them. A lot more use the other type. So they are obviously OK then?.. I have a old (1966) bow roller narrow and our manson 'supreme' is anything but at times. Excellent holding but invariably comes up wrong way around. Considering getting a kicker welded as an extension to the roller or a steven joyce?
  10. So...the answer is no, no one has actually used one?

    Flip Link?

A Aussie company has come up with a anchor straightener that look good, anyone used one? Chains Ropes and Anchors are supposed to be the NZ agents but only sell the Italian models. http://www.anchorright.com.au/blog/announcements/anchor-right-australia-introduces-the-innovative-flip-link
  12. Yep, a very nice friendly chap. He appreciated that we were concerned about him. Very light breeze this morning and like a true sailor, tacked all the way out of Urquharts to where I don't know. Was going to invite him over for coffee. Another time.
  13. His name is Harry Martin and very much alive. Lives in Port Fitzroy and really is as rough as his keeler but a nice old codger. So a happy ending. (Just likes living below!)
  14. Whangarei Police said they will organise a response. The way the dinghy is sitting on the deck it might be a mob. Can only do what they have asked.
  15. Seriously, we are worried enough Police said they will probably check her out tomorrow. So he was old?(ish). I have a bad feeling he is either not on board or.. We shone a 500w HID at her tonight and nothing so no, I don't think he is undeneath giving her a scrub. Radio going and hatch open, dinghy on deck. Find out tomorrow I 'spose.
  16. Besides the obvious of 'I saw him on LOTR', we have a small cutter rigged sloop here in Urquharts Bay, white topsides, green around the portlights and very rough looking with a clinker tender tied down on the forepeak. She arrived yesterday afternoon and no sign of the skipper. The hatch is open and a radio going yet no one there? Anyone know this keeler?
  17. Attempting an insurance job!?
  18. Thanks! Could have done with it but we draw 1.8m so not much room for the stingrays to fit under us! Survived, then wind went south monday so shot into MCM. Now have a 'anchor buddy'so might not blouse out so quickly when the lee shore looms!
  19. Urquharts Bay...somewhere in there. Wind now 56kts.
  20. Wind! No fun in Urquharts Bay at the moment. Anchor dragged a little last night with a 3.3m tide so no sleep but holding now. Wind nor'east gusting 45kts and more to come. I just love livaboard boating!!
  21. Pettit vivid. Was sold a can by Warren at MCM so slapped it on in December. I know its for alloy hulls but went over our old sanded altex and still getting 6kts on the donk dispite some time anchored off Opua. Stuff sticks to it but a day smashing about through gin palace wakes and its almost clean again. Chernobyl brand is pretty good I hear, antifouls yours and everyone elses boats....
  22. Friends from the UK bought a different boat after going in a test sail in one and could see the ocean washing past...through the topsides! I think this is the brand that Brian at Halfmoon Bay said they have to prop when out of the water as the hull can't support its weight on the keel. He had one there that had hit Liz reef one Xmas.
  23. Good news. Vessell located and all safe and well.
