  1. ah - but on the new 'all carbon' beastie do the need to look bling . . . or look fast!
  2. sack the nubies and give deano his job back?
  3. I'd save for a little longer - it's a buyer's market and unless you are desperate to get into a restore project, borrowing from the outset seems risky. There's plenty of great boats with far less issues that fit a similar length on the market.
  4. I'd go for the 55's. My recollection of 830's is it was quite easy to flog a kite - impact load from which can be very high and wood probably stuff most commodity 40 blocks (especially the ronstAn ones) you can also reeve light sheets through the same block before removing the heavy sheet. The shock cord keeps the block off the deck for two reasons 1 - limiting damage 2- noise! There's nothing worse than trying to get some sleep in an 830 q berth after a Coastal party listening to the damn thing bounce about on deck! It accentuates through the back of the boat like a drum!???? Not good for t
  5. Just a souped up 'Wolf ain't she?
  6. "Usually" when the boom is attached to the mast it causes the mast to over rotate and the mast spanner is used to pull it back which is "usually" why you can just have it attached to the boom with a single control. Looking at your video, you might be able to have a mast spanner between the foot and the boom and then rig a pair of control lines down to part way along the main beam (say 1/4 to 1/3) each side, and then lead then back to the cockpit along the hull sides (a bit like the line in the screenshot). I suspect that the spanner would foul the boom on occasion though as the control li
  7. can't get the norseman fittings any more I thought. Lots of chatter on the interweb about not being able to buy the cones any more either. Aparently you need new cones when you replace the wire. here's the press release from navtec (2nd one down) http://www.navtecriggingsolutions.com/news.html
  8. I use Spotify premium and love it though do have a slight guilty concience about them not paying tax here in NZ. You can down load your playlists for when you are out of cell phone range / on a plane etc. which is a real plus. I do like some of the variations on Pandora though - ska radio out of Jamaica etc.
  9. Detailed correctly all connections should be stronger than the linear material. Eg. Ronstan's swage fittings are designed to fail at 1.25 times the MBL of the 1x19 cable strand - assuming they are factory swaged of course! The aramid fibre cables from parafil I used on a sculpture many years ago had the same criteria. I didn't believe them and tested the crap out of them. Had my rigger do a deliberately 'good termination', 'bad termination', and a bunch of random terminations - always failed in the fibre - not at the termination. I was very impressed at the time. Still can't get anoth
  10. pretty sure they supply an infused panel as well.
  11. Had to google DSC to see what you were refering to and found this. http://www.vhf-dsc.info/new.html On first impression you'd have to say that this would definitely be far more effective than a EPIRB/PLB in NZ coastal waters. Which would make your last comment valid for coastal sailing / cat 2 ad 3 races.

  13. The point is that they would do it only if it's easy - these people don't do difficult. As KM notes Data base searches are dead easy. When they find you've out too long they don't even have to look for you. They'd stop paying and you'll come running! I think chasing a lot of overseas corporate tax is not that easy. If you look at your transactions you'll find the service or product or transaction is processed in other jurisdictions - ie Spotify is processed in Ireland and the service is developed in Scandinavia somewhere so it seems to me technically it is the user that's importing it. 'we can't disprove their existence'! Just feckin awesome! Should really be 'We can't be bothered to disprove their existence' As noted above its really not that hard to check if it's disused and if it isn't then to have it removed!
  15. not true - they went pretty hard after the southland finance guy . . .
  16. weight was a biggy for me as well. I went for the 240TC - only 15kg for 240kg payload - wah, two kids and a wekend of supplies no problem for the next 5 years. By that stage I'll be able to trust S1 on his own to not drown himself on the paddle board out to the boat in a breeze! The best thing about them though was that they were an NZ company. I called them up - told them I didn't like the dicky rowlocks and ali oars on the puffins. No problem - they just built me the puffin with the pedestal mounted rowlocks and I reused my old oars.
  17. I got 12 years out of my SP puffin left on the rack at Westhaven. Bought another on last year and have it stored under the deck at home for quick launch. The new one is the next model up but the PVC is still the same.
  18. bit bigger but http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/multihull/auction-1075586468.htm

  24. Cheers Willy. Have you looked at the market price of submerged lead on TM lately - plumetting like, well, lead! I'm still leaning to staying with LPG because we'll probably also have portable bbq on board and so limiting fuel types is something else for me to consider. If I had diesel propulsion then I think I'd maybe consider this in lieu but O/B is petrol of course!
  25. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1081577970 sh*t - at that price - I'll just get 2 - one for each hull!
