  1. right now on trademe 3 aries ($430?, $1000?, $1900?).............................43'? and a new-oldstock hydrovane $8000............... to 42'?
  2. i would have thought that the soft, standard ablative antifouls would be more than flexible enough
  3. the windpilot pacific is also an excellent, highly developed, minimal wind vane self-steering system on trademe recently and if anyone here bought the windpilot pacific light that came off my boat last year for $700 for their project boat i'll buy it back for that or swap it for an atoms + navik wind vane! (it would simply bolt on the mount left behind on my boat)

ISBN 0-449-22082-6. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_Noelle according to this stuff story of last week it's a 2 part story??? Abandoned will air as a two-part drama, starting Sunday, August 30 at 8.30pm on TV ONE as part of the Sunday Theatre season. http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/71140179/rose-noelle-story-to-be-retold-in-twopart-film
  5. Abandoned screens on TV One, Sunday, 8.30pm Abandoned dramatises the much-recounted story of how, in 1989, the trimaran bound for Tonga from Picton was overturned by a freak wave and the four men aboard spent a tense 119 days adrift before coming ashore on Great Barrier Island. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=11503072
  6. the media say the whale above and below are not the same whale but there seems quite a bit of mis-identification going on as yesterday today's "antarctic minke" was assumed to be a hauraki gulf bryders whale and some stories in the herald say it's dead but instead it's apparently back out wonder if they can tie up all these stories with some kind of summary or once they put a duff story out on the web it lingers there in caches confusing everyone for ever
  7. i'll be in rotorua over this weekend so i'll find an excuse to get over there what rum would you like? can't seem to send you a pm (may need to clear out the old ones?) but maybe you can send me a pm with mobile number so we can work out a time and place closer to the date?
  8. if digger doesn't want it i'll certainly take it off your hands for a bottle of rum?
  9. afaik just needs some serious filtering i guess that's why you should cruise with LOTS of filters and maybe a meter of muslin, a funnel + a bucket

  11. if buying new the cape horn (and its froggy copy) is elegant in its simplicity and allows a below deck tiller pilot and i hope we all know a humble tiller pilot out of the sun and weather only working light loads to guide a windvane force multipling servo paddle should prove to be far more reliable than the average tiller pilot grinding out huge loads while washed in salt water with the advantages of compass heading following, easy + cheap world-wide? replacement and not even being a mission critical part of the self-steering (did i men

just thought to open up the back of the mh050 uniden sure enough a seemingly common heatshrunk pac of 4 x AAA slotted in there if and when trying to diy a replacement from individual batteries apparently a soldering gun should be used http://www.robotroom.com/Soldering-Batteries-2.html
  14. i have an old raytheon/raymarine plotter that used seatalk to share information between screens ie the plotter could call up the radar display or sounder and the sounder and radar screens could presumably call up the plotter putting all the data on 1 screen and only having 1 screen could be dodgy but modern integrated systems seem to have multiple screens that can share the data so shouldn't be a problem on "cost on object, correctly setup systems"

  17. i know next to nothing but expecting 1 of the most basic rules - starboard to trump a specialized - mark rounding doesn't seem right....

if you're quick you could get this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/parts-accessories/radio-electronics/auction-931875422.htm it may be 7 years old with a rechargeable battery that won't hold its charge.... however it has the alkaline AA pack............ but pulling that out each time to change the batteries will affect the already old seals of a less waterproof model..... no problem for dry use but if you, and it, are slopping about at water-level trying to guide rescuers to your position you need the seals to be in "as new condition" talking of safety, hav
  19. various models come up on trademe every now from $50 - $5000 in a fair range of age and compleness perhaps not enough for 44' but i've got a 1970's windpilot atlantic 4? (vertical axis, auxiliary rudder?) in the garage that guided a halbery rassy here from europe (until the permanently immersed rudder seems to have hit something and was ripped off) so it needs a new rudder fabricated and stainless mount welded on to the tube............extremely robust german engineering, dated design, no remote control of vane angle but cheap for someone........comes with some stainless welding rods;o)

i went for the MHS050 uniden for its extra waterproof rating it would nice to have the extra transmit power but if you then also have to buy another waterproof bag to put it in the whole thing becomes too expensive and fiddly for an item that will generally die when the battry does in 4? years also as the uniden is the cheapest i won't feel too bad when the battery dies or i lose it (overboard?) when new did a 1 off radio test to the coastguard (okahu bay - skytower) and they reported faint but clear also tested once line of sight with the boat's vhf at okahu bay to wife at ho
  21. seem to remember the rena bridge was getting radar returns from the reef but as they couldn't see anything with the binoculars at night didn't bother changing course or checking the charts shows the need to use multiple sources when checking oddities
  22. i wonder if the rena have hit astrolabe reef if it had been marked with a solar power AIS tranmitter? are lighthouses etc fitted with them, as well as lights, or are they going to be?
  23. a white humpback is back in winter waters off the east coast of oz but telling which one is it getting to be a little complicated now there seem to be at least 4! http://www.earthtouchnews.com/oceans/whales-and-dolphins/migaloo-the-white-humpback-may-have-fathered-two-albino-calves http://www.earthtouchnews.com/oceans/whales-and-dolphins/could-this-rare-white-whale-filmed-off-australias-coast-be-migaloo-junior however if that southern right continues to migrate through the hobson / okahu bay moorings that's where my eyes will need to be the pine harbor fast ferries will n
