  1. Bought and inserted some Sound insulation around the Genset and lowered it into it's frame in the engine room. Next week will be connecting it all up hopefully. Yesterday I helped rescue a Lady in distress. She couldn't start her outboard and then tried rowing against the current and ended up in the Mud.

  3. Friday we managed tio get 80Kg of old Genny off and 105Kg of new genny back onto the boat. We were going to head out to meet Shanson, but ran out ot time, so left early Saturday morning. Arrived at Motahei to find Shanson and crew at Anchor needing a new Fuel filter. A slight oops with a fuel valve meant an old disused tank foulded the filter. New filter, bled system and off we went. A good 18kts gave us a fantastic sail across to Maharangi. Last night we watched the nail biter of a game and this morning we motored home. Fantastic time.

  6. Just got in at 1.45PM. Missed Bathurst start, darn. Oh well. Removed the old genset, measured up for new frame for new genny. Never simple is it. Will Have to reroute the main tanks Balancing fuel lines and it is going to be a tight squeeze but it should go in OK. Fitted new Raw water strainer and found I was short one adaptor. Made a new mounting bracket for the pump and now it is fitted in a different orientation to get rid of stupid bends and impossible to get at bolts.

  9. Saturday....Worked on Bilge pumping system and think I have all that sorted at last. Got old genset ready to remove. Sunday...couldn't be bothered going out to the boat in the rain. The only down point of the boat on a swing mooring.

  14. If the boat is a common design, the the stability figures were done right back at the beginning with the first boat and the designer should be able to supply those figures. It is only when the Keel or Mast is played with that those figures go out the window. When I read that I needed to perform the stability test to get Cat 1 I thought well that blows taking a Tahitian offshore then. But the inspector I talked to said no the tests are for new unproven designs and that I would not have to produce those figures, because these Tahitians had been sailing all over the world for years.   15. Interesting you say that. Because the guys at CSL said no you don't want the flux gate because having so much steel in the boat, the magnetic field changes as you heel over. So instead they have this stereo GPS antennae. Two receivers about 18" apart. So the differences in signal times apparently act like a Rate gyro and the course is more accurate than a flux gate.

  19. I perhaps should add, there are many Glycols. Not all are poisonus. Glycols are and Organic compund from the Alcohol group. Ethylene Glycol is the Poisonus one. Diethylene Glycol. There are Tri's and Pents and so on, but Di is used in the making of Polyesters and urathanes and Paints etc. Polyethylene Glycol is not poisonus and can be found in foods Propylene Glycol is not poisonus and is often used in medicenes, food aditives and external body products.
  20. Ummmmm, it gets absorbed through your skin. I wouldn't be putting it on my toes. It might kill more than just toe jam.
  21. Get the paint cleaned off and allow it to dry and then see what is soft. As Motorbike found with his, the black stuff was not actually rot, but old sump oil and diesel that had soaked into the timber and softened it up.
  22. Without reading the links first, the big problem with Evadure was descovered about 10yrs (or probably more now) back. That being of it being porous. The Solvent evaporating would leave "holes" in the epoxy and it was found that timber coated in the stuff still took on water. It is also debatable as to whether the biocide in Evadure actualy helps or not. Sure it kills mould, but the epoxy pretty well locks it up anyway. A coating of a low viscosity solvent free Epoxy will work just as well in many situations. But if you want to penatrate into timber, a bit of solvent in Epoxy, or the premade
  23. It is just simple anti-freeze. In fact, the cheapest ones tend to be the more plain basic. The expensive ones are usually called Corrosion inhibitors. But even if it does have a bit of corrosion inhibitor in it it doesn't hurth anything. Now the one thing you do need to check is if it is a pure glycol or a ready to use, which is the glycol diluted with water to be used directly. Not an economical way of buying it diluted.     All bigger than 10m if my ability to convert from Imperial to Metric is anygood There seems to be that magic mark in size around the 12m point. Below and they all seem to be "Sports/Day sailor" type designs and 12 and above start to take on the "Weekender/Cruiser" style. The ability of making good sea miles each day is all OK if you have the right wind driections. I thiunk that tends to go to custard sailing around NZ though. For instance, I have been waiting for months now, trying to get a decent weather pattern to get a simple distance from Napier to Auck. The has been nothing so far. Eve
