Sussed the BBC, NYT, TG, TA and Jazeera but no news in them at all just sh*t about sh*t that happens not around me or my locations

Yeah, well, they can't be held responsible for the limited range of your outlook I guess.

:)  :) Or your ability to just admit you're wrong as your play the man not the game post clearly shows.

Nope - played the problem.

You deride internationally successful publications as not publishing news because it only contains "sh*t about sh*t that happens not around me".  This position can really only be interpreted as a narssisitic and parochial point of view.  It doesn't in any way address the original question of identifying balanced media.

It provides us with the insight that balance is not actually what some people want.  They want a publication that affirms them.

You put yourself up as as the arbiter of balance and content.  It would be remiss of me and not addressing the problem if I pretended you were not it.

I will allow that this is a position you take as your internet persona, and that you may be (I suspect are) much more widely informed, literate, interested, broadly read and balanced irl.

That guy elliot749, less so.  But I wear his reflexive downvotes as a badge of honour.

OK I've deleted all in your post that was  just playing the man, YET AGAIN, and we see your post only contains one sentence.

The thread was talking NZ outlets, I continued in that theme. If you wanted to go wider you should have said so.

BBC.  Stiff upper lip, but straight up.

New York Times (partially paywalled, but worth it)

The Guardian.  Telegraph for balance.

The Atlantic (paywalled, but worth it) for its long-form journalism

Al Jazeera, with provisos

Stuff - distinctly improved on its earlier incarnations

Newsroom has interesting mix of opinions and has added to  local investigative journalism

The Spinoff.  Its miles from balanced, but open about it and doesn't keep trying to sell me a house

I would take the bbc off that list given their record over the last 5, years.

upvote The Atlantic, and NYT - also exceptional quality English.

Gave up on Stuff about 6y ago. RNZ for me.

sometimes Washington Post

careful KM, you might get hoisted on your own petard

I don't swing that way but if there is some intergalactic hoisting that needs to be done I'd pick Georgiou all day every day. Janeway, while not topping any list, would obviously have to be second.

Oh hell yes. That polar bear one was an absolute shocker in so many ways. Attenborough took a big dive in my books over that as well.

US ones only if there is a potentially interesting link but otherwise they have no relevance hence hold no interest. From what little I've seen most are the same as Stuff, proud to tell you they will only publish one side of the story and then only the bits of it they like.

BBC front of house newsroom went to the dogs years ago at the hands of over-ego’d TV presenters (like many commercial channels in that regard). But behind the scenes they still deliver some high quality insightful & balanced material - ironically mainly their reporting of wider works affairs outside the UK.

The only news media I am prepared to pay for is the Economist. Fabulous combination of in-depth analysis inc both facts & opinions. And most importantly it’s easy to see which article is which - very little blurring ( if you are reading it sober). By the time it reports NZ events they must be NZ events of interest worth knowing about. And they are often written up more clearly by overseas media than by our own clowns.

For AC viewing, I’m a grown man so obviously I can’t stand the pre-school TV coverage and only listen to livestream.

Good point Fogg, as dodgy as the BBC New reporting has been on occasion it is spectacular in fields beyond that. Not many, if any, organisations could challenge their nature related outputs.....one on polar beers excepted.

On sussing NZ outlets I am struggling to find much variation in the news being reported even if there is a sh*t load of variation on the commentary around those news stories. Not that sure the Herald is as dodgy as some others but as most is paywalled there could be trash behind it.

'NZ outlets' added just for Aard ;)

We are small, a village really.  Its to be expected that not a lot happens, and when it does everyone is gossiping about it.

What I miss is anything with analysis and long form journalism.  We used to have it - Listener (RIP) among others - but these forms seem to have all but disappeared and we are left with quick-fire clickbait as a poor second prize.

I'm keen if someone wants to point me in the direction of a publication that is doing this.
