In 2001 The New York Times quoted Rick Etzel of Montauk, New York, captain of The Breakaway, as saying: "Fishermen believe bananas are bad luck. Something about a shipload of bananas that carried some weird bacteria which killed everyone on board. Maybe fictitious, but some people take the banana thing very seriously. A few years back, a guy on one of my charters showed up wearing a Banana Republic T-shirt. Another guy in the group went up to him with a knife and slashed the logo."

My understanding is that the superstition had its roots in the point Sabre makes, bananas make other fruit ripen fast, generally meaning if you were shipping produce and had bananas on board, they would make the remainder of the shipment go rotten. Hence they are bad luck.

There are numerous accounts of bananas on board and adverse events occurring.

One of the most amusing on this site is Oracle having a nice banana chocolate shake on the White Island race a few years back, I believe for breakfast on a nice sunny morning, then promptly breaking the rudder.
