Kick Ass 47
Hi What is the best recomended sat phone taking price into consideration?
Battleship 100
We had an inmarsat pro we bought on price was very cheap but basic. Since switched to an Iridium go for the weather forecasts. The inmarsat was a bit harder to get a fix with, the iridium with external Ariel gets an instant fix every time. Depends what you want. For all the bells and whistles the Iridium go is hard to beat. For a basic phone that will get the job done or for backup the Inmarsat is ok. PM me if you want a cheap inmarsat.
Island Time 1,235
Personally, I'd use an iridium go. Cheaper, more versatile. No I don't sell them. Try predict wind, they do.
Beccara 25
What are you trying to use it for/want it for? Go's are good for updates and services but in the sh*t, I wouldn't count on them. The Iridium Extreme unit was my goto unit on the water and in remote areas upto and including jungle at work - Never missed a beat

Bad Kitty 252
Hi Meister, I've got a 9505 Iridium phone, docking cradle, handheld privacy hand piece, external aerial, portable aerial, 240v & 12v chargers, pelican case to keep the phone in when it's not in the cradle, all second hand but in excellent condition. Upgraded our system, looking for around $1,000. The docking cradle was nearly as expensive as the phone from memory, let's you have a pc hooked up & just plug the phone into the cradle. Sing out if you're interested, I can throw in a new sim card ready to hook up also, BK

Bad Kitty 252
All good, I'd go the handheld Iridium, we've got an Iridium Go which is a great system, but if you want it for emergencies as well then with the Go you need a normal phone in the liferaft as well as the Go. Normal Iridium phone you can keep in a case in the grab bag, & hook it to the laptop when you need weather. If it's just about the weather & sailmail, then the Iridium Go is awesome. It does also have an SOS button, but I'd still rather have the phone if the SHTF.

Boatworks 23
Thanks for the advice, will keep all that in mind when it is time to purchase one We used an Iridium Go with an external aerial mounted on the pushpit for this year's RNI race (Provincial Cowboy). It was paired to two iPhones. I highly recommend it as a simple solution. The only downside is the download speed as of course we are all used to 3G and 4G. The texting was great - we used that for all our position reports and it worked well. If you are using Predictwind offshore for weather downloads, it's important to know exactly what files you need and don't download others. Important to spend a bit of time getting familiar with it and the apps beforehand but all quite intuitive. We had the unlimited data package on monthly account and only ran it for the months of the event. We had a charged up prepay SatphonePro as a backup in the grab bag and never needed it. Thanks for that info, sounds like the way to go. I am wanting to keep a simple system so think i am set on the irridium go. Unlimited plan looks reasonable as well. Have heard the pre pay phones can get pretty expensive!
