ICOM VHF Handheld not receiving

I have a ICOM VHF Handheld IC-M33 which is not receiving. It appears to be working ok part from that ie it is transmitting ok.

Any ideas ?

Broken antenna??

Ive seen internal issues with the antennas, if you flex it, does it feel consistent resistance along its length?

Wondered about that - it is slightly bent. Guess the thing to do would be to find someone with a similar radio. ICOM want $115 just to look at it. May as well buy a new one. Any recommendations for radios ?

Squelch level set to high?

Speaker stuffed? Try using the AquaQuake function. You should hear a vibrating beep from the speaker.

Speaker fine - sound comes from speaker with squelch open and Aquaquake sound works fine. The radio is 10 years old from Safety at Sea and I bought it because of ICOM's reputation but the the thing has hardly been used and is in mint condition, with no salt damage so not too happy with ICOM any more.

Great features there. Have they got any smarts to seal with MMSI numbers if you're using it on different vessels?

the drawings show a removeable antenna

 

 

remove it, connect a meter? of wire to the centre connector on the radio

 

tune to the weather channel

No, sorry. Ive not seen one that does that. Without MMSI the DSC function does not work. NZ is behind the times here, in europe and US this is a standard feature. Changing the MMSI requires a visit to a dealer.
