SloopJohnB 322
I know it's not sailing but it's carbon fiber. https://news.thomasnet.com/featured/first-3d-printed-carbon-fiber-bike-a-technological-marvel-?channel=newsletter&campaign_type=PNA&campaign_name=0618&utm_campaign=0618&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_source=PNA&tinid=221696449&ni=1&cs=PNA
wheels 543
It may be Carbon fibres and resin, but I can't see it as being carbon fibre as we know it. the strength being in the fact that the fibres are laid unidirectionally. I wonder if the material is as rigid and as strong.
erice 732
in 1 shot of the video you see what looks like the printhead snipping off a carbon filament it has just laid it would take days with a monofilament system to build a bike but laying carbon mono and immediately following behind with epoxy would work as a proof of concept not sure how they would squeeze out the excess epoxy tho... guess the funding is to upscale the machine for the laying of multiple strands at once
wheels 543
Hmmm, then it is hardly printing, rather a robotic 3D layup machine.
erice 732
^ but that wouldn't work as a clickable headline too techie
MartinRF 53
Not boatbuilding either but very definitely carbon fibre layup automated: /Martin
wheels 543
Very cool too. But it is not 3D printing. I wonder if someone n the original article has simply got the information wrong.
Battleship 100
That looks not dissimilar to the process they use for 3di sails. I wonder if that's where Norths got the idea.
