Stainless Steel

Recommended Posts

If using phosphoric or oxalic acid for stains on gel coat don't leave on too long and wash thoroughly after - I always give a good wax after to protect the gel coat as the acid seems to make the gel coat a little more porous after - especially if the gel coat isn't in great condition to start with ...that way you help prevent the stains re-occurring ...

SS  doesn't seem ideal. The  carbon fibre interacts badly with SS and SS with aluminium.

Has anyone used titanium? No corrosion. Reasonably strong, lightweight. Seems ideal for nuts, bolts and washers.

i imagine the problems with titanium alloys are

cost (10 times ss), hardness, brittleness + though it doesn't corrode with carbon it does with aluminium alloys

difficult to extract from it's oxide = expensive

hardness = bugger to form, cut threads etc

very little flex = worse tendency to fatigue and crack than ss

Titanium is indeed used in many very high spec Blocks etc. It is an excellent material, corrosion free, very light and immensly strong. But as Erice says, expensive, due to it needing specialist equipment to work with it. However, that is rapidly changing now we have 3D printing in Titanium. Any part in any shape can be made from it at the push of a button.

just back from some ss buying at anzor, east tamaki, 41 truegood

impressive

1st question they asked

do you want marine grade (316) SS or normal (304)?

1 mtr M6 316 threaded rod   - $8.44 + gst

M6 316 nuts                            $0.15 + gst

M5 304 grub screws                $0.26 + gst

next time might grab a mtr of M7 threaded rod and stock up on M5,6,7 nuts and washers
