Brendon 0
Wellington Police launch took Selena under tow off Palliser, looks like they towing her into Palliser Bay. No safe harbour there but they can get some respite from the conditions. http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/wellington/70750247/distress-call-for-40foot-yacht-stuck-off-wairarapa-coast
Steve Pope 243
At least it is a nor-wester and not a South-Easterly, the closer to the coast the better, wind, but not a lot of sea.
Black Panther 1,591
Sounds like a competent crew to me. pan , not a mayday.
Island Time 1,239
That coast deserves respect regardless of the wind dir, and should be avoided completely in strong conditions if at all possible. The fishermen at Ngawi will tell you that the cost is a natural wind funnel there, and 50-60 knots in cook strait can become 100 or more off the South Wairarapa Coast. They reckon it is not uncommon to have stones 10mm across hit the windows 10 miles out to sea! Not the time to have an engine failure! No yachts I know of can make ground to weather in those conditions. These guys did OK!
grantmc 59
Hats off too for the crew of the little fishing boat Bonny Kay. They took them under tow into Palliser Bay until the Lady Liz arrived and could take over the tow.
