gisywaterboy 4
Hi all, I am just trying to get my head around the pros and cons of the hard chined keeler. There are a few hard chine designs that seem to have done very well for themselves (pied piper) and seem to perform very well, so why are there not more of them? What disadvantages do they have racing or cruising? Fro cruising they create more internal volume, for racing they plane easliy. so there must be some serious disadvantages because there are very few of them. Cheers. Steve Pope 243
No disadvantage atall, generally a much stiffer boat initially. Think Spencer's, some Birdsals etc. It is all in the eye of the beholder
erice 732
hard chine must have slightly more drag lots more on google http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/multihulls/round-bilge-vs-hard-chine-37594.html
SanFran 12
Love my Spencer32. Right about extra internal space re the hard chine (excusing the general design) but a comfortable cruising boat. Not great for speed though.
Pumbaa 9
It's all about the drag and the cost of building a round bilge boat has dropped hugely since hard chines were being regularly built so that has reduced the biggest reason for offsetting the cost against the performance.
