marinheiro 352
I need to have my new compass swung and a deviation card prepared. Dave Schaefer from Bayswater can certainly do it but a bit of trip to Sandspit, is there anyone closer?
Black Panther 1,587
I've always done my own. Fun and interesting exercise. Try you tube for instructions
Dtwo 157
For Cat 1? Do you really have to? Makes no sense on a cruising boat these days.
Black Panther 1,587
Actually you should be able to do it using a GPS really easy
Dtwo 157
When was the last time anyone actually referred to their deviation card? I'm not convinced that this is a realistic requirement in this digital age. Sure, if all the GPS sats get switched off and the magnetic pole doesn't suddenly switch we might need to be able to steer a compass course, but in my experience steering a small yacht at sea is an exercise in approximation. Leeway would have a far greater effect on your navigation, and I've never seen a set of leeway polars sitting by the chart table.
chariot 243
If you go back to the old school you are supposed to allow for set, rate and drift when plotting a course.
