Lars 0
Hey I’m just wondering if anyone has sailed from Nelson to the bay of islands. I’m wanting to head off around the bed of July and was looking for any helpful information ? Thanks Lars
Island Time 1,239
Not Nelson Specifically but Mana/Wellington.... an the other way around. What would you like to know? What boat, and why mid winter?
Lars 0
Heya mate sorry I meant end of January. I’m in a Downeaster 38. Just the best route up the west or east coast? The wind system I’m looking for ? Any help would be appreciated!
Island Time 1,239
From Nelson to BOI is way shorter via the W coast. Pick the back edge or back half of a low, or the front half of a high then go. S sector up the coast, straight line to north cape. You'll be well off shore for much of it. If you pick the right system, you'll have a great trip fair winds, and following seas
wild violet 38
Island time is dead right have done that run a few times can call into New Plymouth if weather changes, usually 3 days to north cape.

Yes, but of course on the other side of the systems, so you get N sector winds. It can be a long trip on the wind around N Cape to New Plymouth otherwise! The worst bit of coast in the NI, IMO is the wairarapa coast in a big southerly, especially if headed south!
Sail Rock 28
I did this trip a couple of years ago. First day going across to Cape Egmont was westerly 30+ knots and 4 out 5 of the crew were spewing our rings out! Next day it backed to SW and progressively moderated until we had to start motoring from roughly Hokianga. Then flat calm round the top and all the way back to Auckland. Lesson is what IT suggests: avoid being in a hurry and wait for the front edge of the high pressure system (but carry plenty fuel).
darkside 61
I've done three trips on the west, three on the east coast. To me if it's a delivery then west coast every time. If you are cruising go east, get yourself to Napier, then relax and enjoy the rest.
