The Ocean Globe Race

Recommended Posts

I trust that Auckland will be bidding to host this great event against Sydney, with our proud history of competing in the old Whitbread and facilities here it is a natural stop off-prior to the Southern Ocean.

Perhaps after waving goodbye to the AC the squadron would like to step forward as a host club.

I for one recall the hilarity and hijinks associated with the Auckland stopover parties back then (when most of the crews slept on board and werent bothered about rushing to the gym each day)

Could excite that summers sailing-remember the Whitbread big boats racing on our regatta day? The waterfront was packed-we havent seen that since.

First boat has finished about an hour ago. Translated9 (the italians) have won the leg from Cape Town. Lion NZ and Steinlager are out there sailing alongside.

The next 2 are near the Poor Knights, should finish tonight.

Good to see Waikiore is out there on the finish boat welcoming them in.

All the boats will be berthed at North Wharf.

Was wonderful to meet some of the European supporters and welcome this traditional style race to Auckland , deserving line honours winners Translated 9 pushed harder and navigated smarter than some potentially much faster craft on this long leg, check them all out as they arrive in the Viaduct between now and Christmas (with two still coming in the new year)

Spent a very pleasant cuppa hours wandering thru the basin looking at these fabulous boats. So much history.

And lovely people - we chatted to 3 or 4 of the crews as they worked on their boats. A lot of French people. And a lot of women which is awesome.

Will be heading out 14 Jan to farewell them on their next leg.

Unbelievable that it's all so low key when you think of the Whitbreads of the past.

Hats off to all the crews.

Start on Sunday straight off the Squadron for the third leg and a turning mark at Orakei Bouy for shorebound spectators, I wonder who suggested that good idea.

Got back from the bay just in time for the start, good breeze to shoot them away, at least no one anchored on the course-for those with long memories, though the Raven 31 that motoring went in front of White Shadow off Narrowneck was a bit silly.

Haha, yes but White Shadow sailed right through the OK Dinghy course - but they were on starboard.

Interesting to see Paul Cayard at the Squadron on Friday night.
