The compass and I...coastal navigation.

...thought it worth while for the newer boat owners to stump up here....

My question is ...from the direction that your compass says you are going.....

...what FIVE things do you need to take into consideration to get a more accurate idea of where you are really going ?

Now I have a steel boat so have a problem with compasses to start with (thats a hint)...

To you old buggers...give the newer guys a run...this is important.

Variation

Deviation

Current

sideways slip (forget what ya call it) Edit- oh yeah, Leeway..

Can't think of a 5th right now. But I DO know that you cannot hang a rubbish bag behind a through bulkhead compass and put empty baked bean tins in it... Don't ask me HOW I know that.....

I tell you what you don't need, and thats a touchscreen chartplotter in the rain and a seaway. One that defaults to heads up/ course up so that your head tries to snap off when you look at it, and it zooms to ethiopia every time it gets wet.

just sayin.
