Fishing boat missing off Stewart Island

One found so far in search for survivors

Last updated 19:54 15/03/2012

LATEST: One survivor has so far been found after a fishing boat capsized near Stewart Island with nine people on board.

The boat Easy Rider was heading north near Stewart Island last night when it capsized around midnight, Inspector John Doherty said.

Police have confirmed that nine people were on the boat when it capsized. It was previously reported that up to 14 people were on board the boat.

The one survivor was found at 6pm tonight.

Police said a major search and rescue operation was underway with boats and helicopters being used to search the area where the fishing boat is thought to have gone missing.

The boat is understood to have been heading to the Ruggedy Islands on a muttonbirding trip when it struck trouble about midnight.

It is understood the boat left Bluff at 8pm last night but failed to make a 2pm rendezvous at Stewart Island today.

Southland area commander Inspector Lane Todd refused to comment on the situation but said police would be sending out regular updates throughout the night.

A media conference was expected to be held mid-morning tomorrow, he said.

Media reports have suggested up to nine more people could be missing, but the number of people still unaccounted for was actually higher, Todd said.

The Easy Rider was involved in a rescue operation of another fishing vessel in January.

Two of the five people on board that boat died after they were flung from their vessel after it capsized near White Island in Foveaux Strait.

Easy Rider's skipper spotted the three survivors in the water and rescued them, police said at the time.
