How Many people do you think at North Sails Sri Lanka, Doyle China or China Sail Factory where a good portion of of the sails in NZ have come from in recent years have ever seen a yacht let alone stepped on one.

Having recently been to a very interesting technical evening/loft tour at Doyles recently, I was under the impression that the skills in sailmaking have evolved somewhat over the last 10 years or so. No longer is a sailmaker required to design a sail in his head, use his experience and expertise to cut it out freehand and then stitch it together using his experienced eye as a guide. Modern sails are designed in a computer first and then laid out in a virtual environment, panels are planned, marked out, cut and then the actual assembly of the sail requires good machining skills, but not necessarily any knowledge of how a sail works.

The skills and experience are still required, but just in different ways. So, if Evolution are wanting someone to assemble and finish sails then, sailing experience isn't necessarily a vital qualifier.
