Re-engine

Whitings are the agents for Gori props and don't sell anythign else when it comes to props. I wouldn't expect that they'd necessarily be independent when it comes to propellor advice.

Henleys are propellor specialists. They're also agents for Flex-o-fold props. You're more likely to get a more rounded and potentially more idependent opinion (certainly more experienced opinion) on propellors from Henleys than you'd get from Whitings.

I agree with grinna re getting Henley's advice. Prop design has not really evolved a hell of a lot over the last 100 years but has been refined somewhat and a prop specialist is the right person to talk to. As far as maintaining speed in a "decent seaway", vessel displacement combined with horsepower is the only way of improving things. Make the boat heavier or throw more power at it. Either option not particularly attractive in terms of comfort, cost and performance in a sailboat.

Although in saying weight helps, in a continuous heavey sea, it doesn't really. A wave or two from a big wake has no affect on my boat. But 35kts on the nose and a heavy sea will drop the speed of my boat to 3kts and in one situation I had just 1.5kts and I have 130Hp and a 23" prop pushing a 26tonne boat.

I would not write off the Kiwi Prop without further investigation - it is certainly best bang for the buck as far as prop upgrades go (price for a Gori especially will make your eyes water), and being able to adjust the pitch means you can get a spot on match to the engine. Every different type of feathering prop needs occasional maintenance, but this has not stopped literally 1000's of max prop installations. I know of a big Given cat with 2 Kiwi props and no problems at all with them.

on a 90m LOA ship we were doing 10knots - bowed into one wave and we were going backwards at 3knots - it was a big wave.....

AC we have a Volvo D2-40 in a slightly larger boat that AC,

It will not push it onto the plane but what we find is motoring home into crap we need to increase revs from 2100 to 2300 to maintain 7.5 kts with boats going backwards beside us.

If your engine is in good condition I would look at reproping, But keep in mind the ability to put the new prop on a larger motor in the future as you will possibly get a new 40 about the same weight as your old one.

We kept our old 2 blade when we repower as the new prop made my eyes water, but one day I will either have to rebuild it or replace it

Probably replace as the improvement in performance is reportedly worth it.
