Grinna 2
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/7 ... -into-jail The judge said he needed to send a strong deterrant message that property theft was unacceptable ..... the guy was sentenced to 12 months in jail. Wooopdy woo!! Is that considered to be a strong deterrant these days???
Guest
Seems a bit harsh to me. Run over a guy and run away is only worth 250 hours. A whole year for pinching someones boat seems way out of proportion !

wheels 543
that property theft was unacceptable .. and when property is stolen everyday, seems strange he picks that to show the strong deterrent. Weird story though. The guy steals a Car in CHCH and drives to Picton, then steals a boat and tries to sail back to CHCH. Maybe he was trying to through the sent by doubling back and using the water. ex Elly 197
Also very quick sentencing. He did the crime last week - usually it takes a year to get to court.
rigger 47
Maybe he could not afford a good lawyer?
DrWatson 381
Perhaps the judge owned the yacht....
Grinna 2
Well,if it was my yacht I'd want to see the bugger swinging from a yardarm. Clearly i'm out of step with the rest of society and more in the same political spectrum as Ghengis khan and Attila the Hun.
speedy 0
Law is for the crim's, what compensation do the victims get, Oh thats right we have to pay tax to keep them nice and cosy in jail, training them more tricks for when they get out.

No! you are right. it's just the low levels of punishment the other crims get that is out of tune with what we expect and used to get.. This theft was punished very low on the scale of things yet murderours get of with light jail terms by comparison. I think they do this to keep the jails from overfiling. In fact i think i read some where the Judge has na up to date list of jail occupancy he refers to when sentencing.
