  1. Guys! guys! Stop with all the McPorn, it's really NSFW, or my fragile mental state Oh yeah,.. and waaaaay off topic
  2. I love the way you make it sound appealing
  3. Epoxy goes pretty soft when heated up, so really not a long-term fix.
  4. Speaking as a mental health professional... Hear Hear!! Com'on BNG - it's not all doom and gloom on this thread - much of it has been about the positive benefits of boat ownership - even the old shitters - with a healthy dose of cynicism thrown in Post hanging off the top of the mast, I'm now replacing the halyard. Feeling lucky right now I am stainless wire splinters Incidentally, my insurance company didn't want to know about my 1974 Jappa because "..it's only going up in value" Bloody thing is full of rust.
  5. Yup, and my old Kiwi boat lives another day
  6. I think they only scanned the first page anyway. Good publicity though huh IT? I discovered a new and exciting way of getting quite nauseous today - spend an hour up the mast while on a mooring in Okahu Bay. However I now have my spinnaker halyard, anchor light and wind indicator back up there.
  7. Everyday sexism. It's a thing. I think there's even a website...
  8. Hi Erice, I sent you a long winded reply. Re the OB idea, the high, pointy back end it problematic - this guy made it work: http://sv-ulladh-log.blogspot.co.nz/200 ... chive.html Personally I hate outboards... noisy, heavy, fuel guzzling things that ruin the lines of a good boat. I love being able to carry them into the garage and rebuild them on the bench though
  9. Hi Erice, I have the wee Spencer next to you, I did feel a bit guilty the other weekend when my engine started first pop then we sailed off the mooring anyway while you were working away... On the the recommendation of the Yanmar chaps at Westhaven I took the bits of my donkey (YSE8) to these guys http://www.enginerebuilders.co.nz/ in Ponsonby. Probably not the cheapest but not horrendous and, well, as you probably heard, my donkey ticks over nicely despite my abuse.
  10. Yeah, I've been thinking WTF... Getting back to topic - The Entertainer - I think what he's asking if a fair price for what you get ...again, if I had the coin... On the other hand, just been talking to my mate who needs to shift his 1/4 tonner - heaps of out of control fun - who'd like to make up a micro consortium for some wet and wild times on a Friday afternoon?
  11. I know, I know - Splash Palace would be mine if only I had the K'ching
  12. Motorcycles. Especially race bikes. A combination of checking into the responsibilities associated with having kids, not actually enjoying the risks, but a major factor was the cost. Boats (real boats with flappy things) go much, much slower but your chances of injury and death are significantly lower AND in my experience cheaper. 15 years ago my last road bike cost me in about 3k in ownership and maintenance - the fuel bill is unknown - and any time around a track was mostly in addition to that. What others are saying about the family/kids stuff resonates with me also. That and Prior
  13. My 40yo plywood boat is worth nothing (maybe the value of the lead in the keel) but it sucks money which means I can't afford a 1020 at the current market rate much as I'd love one... So, as someone Can we expect to see some cheap deals coming through soon?
  14. Yay. I have the Spencer right next to Vindil. I've been watching her for the last couple of years wondering what was happening - so pleased that someone's going to do something with her - she's such an awesome looking little boat.
  15. You haven't seen the bolts in a Spencer then!
  16. Ok, don't want to let this one die juuuusst yet. I've been busy moving house and such like however I'm now keen to make something happen. BBQ sounds great - where? A beach? Someone want to host? (I have a tiny backyard that's full of toy cat and motorcycle crap...) Who's interested?
  17. Out of interest, what were the mods? I have a non-spencer keel and rudder. (no skeg, turns on a dime)
  18. I was being cheeky Flyers on other people's boats... hmm, where they won't get wet and then become paper mache.
  19. Shiiiiiiit! - Well done! Sounds great, for us Aucklanders at any rate. BBQ on said big black jungle cat?
  20. Very pretty. I only have an old, 'light' #1 which would tear in anything above 15 knots - bloody great sail in light airs though - I've seen 4 knots in 4.5 knots breeze. Lidgards made me a heavy #2 and main a couple of years back (really nice sails) the #2 rolls down to a 3 which was handy on the trip back with 34 blowing past Bean (I had kids and a non-sailor aboard)
  21. SanFran - you're representing us very well - my boat isn't even on the full history list Interesting to note that the list is dominated by larger boats (if I had the money I'd happily sail away in Rhiannon) and let's be honest - the Serendipitys were never that fast (did see 9.5 knots heading over to Waiheke the other day though) Also I see these old tubs are still popular and being raced regularly down in the sounds. Ok, so.. some interest in an owners something then.. How do we go about setting such a thing up - anyone know?
  22. Yup, saw you out there between Waiheke and Motuihe - you had your spinnaker up, I was the mad bugger yelling profanities about the rum race heading in the other direction
  23. Boats aren't jealous... Yeah, bit by bit, I'm still not sure about the head... Plans? hmmmm, the ones on the wooden boat owners asoc. or another source?
  24. Yeah, but let's be honest, your's is kinda special
  25. So.. I've recently met a couple of different people who have bought and cleaned up one of these old plywood skegs, much as I've done. And then there was the line honors in the end of year rumble on Friday... And trying to find information that is largely kept in peoples' heads and fading away with time is troubling, despite everybody seeming to have a story about John, his boats, his yard and having once owned a stiletto... And I have a love-hate relationship with my own which appears the norm. (They sail slowly on their sides) except that one time on the perfect reach or that other occasi
