  1. We have been lobbying the non church going Westside 88's to take on the Eastside 88's over these two Sunday afternoons. It is a bit of a journey from Westhaven but BBYC have offered to host boats or crews who want to start out on Sunday from Half Moon Bay not Westhaven. So far War Machine and Undercover have expressed interest, weather permitting. It is a great piece of water to sail on and looks like fun. Who else is keen?
  2. Quick report and a bit of amateur onboard multimedia from the 88 fleet..... Great race. Even if it was a bit of a soldiers course there were still passing lanes. Lay through to Gannet trying not to get too stuffed by the slow overtakers, various degrees of cluster F#$%k hoisting round Gannet, but a 9.5 for Sailor Moon who cut the corner and were off. Breeze kicked in for the beat back to Rakino and the short rock hopping tacks round Motutapu followed by a "leisurely" Rum Reach down to the finish Congrats to Jacko for a convincing line honours win. Line 1 Sailor Moon 2 War Ma
  3. Pierce Wins 2016 Young 88 Single Handed Champs A brilliant Westerly breeze and clear sky greeted the BBYC Race committee as they setup early Sunday morning. The 2016 iteration of the Mount Gay Rum Young 88 Single Handed Championships is round one of the Mount Gay Rum Young 88 123 Series. Eleven boats lined up for the honour of first on line and the awesome Bruce Elliott Memorial Trophy – and the bragging rights that come with it. By the start of Race One, the fleet was ready, some even managing a bit of practice before hand… The sound of the start gun saw a very modest start by Yo
  4. SSANZ ANZAC 250 – Young 88 Heartlight’s Story – By Nigel Garland Heartlight has just completed the SSANZ, Chains, Ropes and Anchors, ANZAC 250 Shorthhaul (180nm) and would recommend all 88’s do it next year. www.ssanz.co.nz We left Thursday evening in a very light Nor’ Easter that built to 10-12knots as we tacked through the Motuihe Channel. Plenty of bigger boats still around which was encouraging though a long night ahead as we as we headed out to Channel Island in a short chop and about 15 knots. Hoping we’d have a lay through to Cuvier Island went out the window with an Easterly shift t

Here are the pics that Suellen captured.
  6. Media Release: Sunday 10 April 2016 Bill Dalbeth and his crew of Richard Bicknell, Ross Weauer, Chris Maddock, Oliver Scott Mackie, Ian Vickers and Ned Dalbeth-Hudson are the 2016 Harken Young 88 National Champions. Dalbeth also claimed the Tanaka Cup for first owner driver on Waka Huia. The team scored 17 points over the regatta, with an 8th, two 3rd’s and two guns. After a lengthy protest hearing the committee ruled that Waka Huia was not over the start line in race 3 and she was reinstated in 1st place to secure the regatta for Dalbeth. Mike Sanderson on Flash Gordon had less lu
  7. Blimey that was one tough regatta for skippers, crews, officials and volunteers.... the lightest most variable weekend racing for a long time. Results are in and a few changes at the last minute following protest hearings. Congratulations 1st on line Bill Dalbeth on Waka Huia, 2nd Mike Sanderson on Flash Gordon and 3rd Nathan Williams on Slipstream. 1st Owner Driver Bill Dalbeth, 1st Corinthian Crew Nigel Garland - Heartlight, 1st handicap Ed Massey - Undercover. The winner of the big spot prize of a pair of Harken winches Leigh Miller - Voodoo. Thanks to Garry from Harken a
  8. The Young 88 Owners Association continues to innovate to keep the sailing fun and numbers healthy. This year the association has joined with fleet and event sponsor Harken to provide the “Win Wicked Winches” spot prize; a pair of Harken Performa winches valued at more than $2500. The “nats” has once again attracted a very competitive fleet of young and old “weekend warriors” and global sailing rock stars to duke it out for trophies engraved with a who’s who of NZ Sailing. Mike Sanderson, ISAF World Sailor of the Year and Volvo Ocean race winning skipper has “dusted off” Flash Gordon a
  9. CREW WANTED - HARKEN YOUNG 88 NATIONALS APRIL 9-10 This is one of NZ's hardest fought regattas and is once again attracting the best of our global sailing rock stars, youth champions and weekend warriors. Part of the appeal is the challenge of longer windward leeward legs in the former Americas Cup waters North of Rangitoto. This regatta is sailed under a weight limit so skippers will still be looking for that right combination of experience and weight to fill the gaps = positions available for all ages and both sexes. The fleet looks like at least 16 competitive boats so plenty of opportu
  10. Thanks Ed... not sure what I was doing wrong but the direct ctrl C / ctrl V failed to bring the images through and work beckoned...
  11. A bit tricky to copy paste and attach the full write up.. but you can read it on the 88 web site here: and see the excellent photos from Lissa Reyden from LiveSailDie on the 88 Facebook page here and here

  13. Lining Up For The 2015 North Sails Young 88 Owners Championships October 17-18 sees the hard out racer-cruisers and more laid back cruiser-racers gather for the annual weekend of 88 fun and games on and off the water out of Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. Saturday will see the open fleet sailing windward leeward courses West of Browns Island. They will be joined on Sunday by a restricted fleet with a maximum five crew and no spinnakers. The restricted format is a great way for those new to racing or preferring a more relaxed competition to join in the fun. The in-form Zane Gifford wi
  14. Another great race from SSANZ. Thanks to all those who give their time for us to enjoy an excuse to leap off the couch on a winters day.... The brief Y88 report: Baltic 50, mint sailing conditions after the excitement of the 100 and a great way to end the Two Handed Series. Congratulations to Nathan Williams on Slipstream for another faultless race, managing to carry his number one genny right through (I think) Big ups to Leigh on Voodoo for a well fought second, picking the right headsail at the bottom of the run and grinding down then passing Sailor Moon and War Machine carrying
