  1. What sort of boat Frank? Sounds very much like our learning process with the Davidson 28 and our old MPS. All the above advice is good, especially not running too deep downwind, and easing out that sheet as far as you can without the forward edge collapsing. It is very easy to end up oversheeted after it flaps a bit and you correct. We have also started adding a second tack line tied to the windward rail so we can haul it out from behind the main a bit, but that's a hack. Ultimately we are now setting up a proper symmetric spinnaker as it can get so much more sail out downwind,
  2. Thanks. Given the clang clang clang that goes on in there sometimes I'm inclined to think it's pretty loose, so fingers crossed.
  3. What does "drums down low" mean here? I'd prefer to have a proper display built in but that's more about price. If there's second hand Raymarine gear around that fits it will help with that though. The iPad has the downside of the kids running it down tinkering all the time! I know I have exit access at the bottom and current cables in place which seem to have room but need to get up top and have a look. Are there any particular issues I'm looking for that might prevent it?
  4. Awesome, cheers Island Time.
  5. I have a Davidson 28 which is becoming a bit of a playground for me. I'm building both sailing experience and boat maintenance, repair, and upgrade experience. I have a bunch of old Raymarine gear onboard which is working well enough: ST60+ TriData ST6000 Autopilot The speed sensor only seems to make sense with the boat level and I have some "polite conversations" with the autopilot at times but we're getting by. I have also fitted an NMEA gateway so all this is talking to the plotter and broadcasting on NMEA 2K and over wifi to the iPad. I'm a computer programmer and have
  6. Not going to make this one but I'm starting to get things together so next time! Will in in the small heavy boats div I guess 😄
  7. There's a bit of a related topic over here where I'm trying to dig up any info I can on designs that worked well for a D28 boat. If you have any suggestions there it would be appreciated to! http://crew.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic/17300-davidson-28-rudder-lore/
  8. Mm so I have heard. I'd love to have a go at building an alternative if I can find the right guidance on shape etc. Really hoping to dig up some details of others that were done successfully for this class.
  9. A variant off a Cavalier 28 - more or less the same boat but made in Aussie. Still keen to hear from anyone with more info on the history, design, association etc.
  10. A couple of images for reference:
  11. Hi crew, Half of Auckland mentions they used to sail a D28 and ask me which rudder I have when they hear I sail one. The popular take is that there were multiple variations made to improve the original rudder, many of these being DIY efforts. From what I hear many were extending the leading edge forward to give it some balance as the design I have is pretty much in line with the pivot point. I can't find much trace of the Davidson 28 association as it seems to have faded away before I acquired mine. Does anyone have any info on what people were doing with rudders? Drawing, patterns, mo
  12. Got our first Wed evening race for the summer in with CCYC, with a full crew even. So pleased to have daylight savings here! See you all out there.
  13. @tuffyluffy - yes I did a couple of those, and will be getting back in to them. My negative handicap in the Mark Foy is an interesting twist! I've put down a deposit on the first new sail and started unloading all the accumulated junk from the boat to lighten the load a bit. Bring on summer evening sailing!
  14. Thanks raz, I'll check them out. I see a few D28's around but very rarely sailing. Keen to hear from any others out there.
  15. Hi crew, I have a D28 based out of Hobsonville. I have race crew experience on other boats, but pretty limited experience racing my own. I know my boat isn't going to be setting any records, but I'd like your thoughts on what you'd get in to with a boat like this. There are plenty of big light boats that glide past me, is there an active fleet more on my level? I'm due for a sail refresh so trying to figure out what my goals for the boat are. If it's just cruising I'll make some different choices than if there is good fun and experience building to be had. Note I'm usually shor
