  1. Freedoms Entered! Dear Mr Handicapper, As Freedom has been out of the racing scene for a little bit, I thought I'd attach a photo of current setup to help guide you on a suitable handicap for our fine monomaran. Disclaimer: The Boat builder has called and said a "minor" addition will be added on the day before the race.
  2. I've been racing on Attitude while Freedom is broken. They have a Self tacker number 3 that can be reefed to a number 4. I'm super impressed with that sail and how the boats goes with it. Their setup is a flat track along the main beam, with the sheet going through the car and then forward to a block and tackle anchored on the front beam, with the tails coming back to cleats on the side of the cabin by the cockpit. They have ropes to adjust the car position but they are only used to hold the car on the windward side during a tack. Once released the car seems to hold itself in the right
  3. Freedom may be there! The boat builder is aiming to get her back together that week. She currently looks like this.
  4. I think its all to do with the fit of the lifejacket. Here's a photo of my Daughter at 3 weeks of age. She was still pretty small as it was 1 week before her actual due date!
  5. To be fair, we did do 26.4kts in the last rum race I did with you!
  6. At the latest NZMYC committee meeting I raised the issue of trying to better link the Waitemata and Kawau Bay fleets. The above ideas are good places to start for boats that can be cruised. Another idea could be to try and organise something for the Saturday of Squadie weekend (12-14 Feb), possibly an exception for NZMYC members to join the the round the island race so that local (and none RNZYS) boats could join in. This might motivate more Waitemata multis to come up for the weekend too, being a win/win for RNZYS and NZMYC.
  7. Most of the GBEs i've seen have an overlapper which sheets to the back beam via a bridal to change sheeting angle. The bridal is normally off the back of the motor pod. All the smaller head sails then sheet off the main beam. We just have a block attached to a slider in the beam track and we can play the halyard height/jib cunningham to move the sail up and down to change the sheeting angle.

  9. This terrible diagram is what I sent to Know Me and the crew at Chains Ropes and Anchors when I got some new lines for Freedom. I also got them to do a short line+loop from the bottom of the mooring buoy that could be put around the front beam twice and then looped back over the mooring buoy so that the buoy hangs from the front beam and out of the water, but also acts as a third rope attaching the boat to the mooring. I'm very happy with how that turned out. Dropping and picking up the mooring is dead easy if you leave the dinghy there while you pop out for a sail. We tie the dinghy
  10. In hindsight, I suppose with high load rings used instead of blocks, a purchase system might be viable now.
  11. Do you want it to be adjustable? I looked at this for my old sportboat and found that it would be hard to find blocks strong enough to take the loads if it were block and tackle. With that arrangement above, the ronstan wire block only has a working load of 850kg. Then you start thinking hydraulic but that is too heavy for the very front of the boat and too complicated. A lot of the sportboats have adjustable mast bases which works well to play with tension and keep the weight centralised. The plans for High-n-Fibre showed a really basic setup with a normal hydraulic jack that you
  12. Those photos look unbelievable! Amazing. I've be really interested in see a video of it sailing.

Mike, you weren't kidding when you said you were trying to slow her down before you went over. There is a lot of red in that final stretch. We need to add hot pies to the NZMYC capsize recovery guide!
  14. How awesome was Glenn Ashby giving Spittal a class legal king post! LOL https://youtu.be/kvUqvxwYJh4 How to watch details here but it does look like you'll need to download the app and then buy "the event" for $8 - yeah nah! https://www.americascup.com/en/news/223_AC-app-to-anchor-enhanced-online-coverage-of-Americas-Cup.html
  15. Yep, with you being based in Whangarei and with no other Multis to race against, This Way Up would give you a bit more space and performance than an 8.5. Just get Bill Barry (http://www.coversandcanvas.co.nz/) to build you a boom tent and it'll be a great weekend cruiser.
  16. We went for the highly technical "throw lots of black stuff" at it solution. Interesting how most multis have had rudder issues at some point.
  17. Sounds like one the 8.5s would be perfect for you! I half own one of the GBEs and it pretty much ticks all the boxes you have identified above. Fun to sail, great racing but can be a family cruiser if you don't push it hard. They are very docile boats, so long as you are sensible with how much sail you have up. Kids love the tramps and stability. Hard Drive would be a great option. To go cruising you would probably just need to add a good boom tent (talk to Bill Barry) and a BBQ! You live under the boom tent when cruising so it's worth getting a good one. Here is Freedom in cruising t
  18. Ditto! I've redistilled many of my mates bottles of Bundy and turn it into something drinkable!
  19. I had a look at the facebook photos and not sure I understand your concern. Other than being smaller than usual, what so unseaworthy about his boat?
  20. I have a BF20 that's on a trailer sailer that I've been given and am trying to sell (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=891439399). Seems like a really nice motor for the few times I've used it. 6amp charging as standard and can be upgraded to 12amp I think? If you want to help unbolt it, your welcome to borrow it to see how it fits and goes. I'm really hoping I can sell the boat without the motor as I really want to keep it for cruising on Freedom/hooning around in my RIB. Mine seems to have a smaller prop than the 9.9 yamahas run so that might be a point of difference. I do
  21. What are you going to use the boat for? If racing - Yamaha 8hp is a good option or the Tohatsu. If not racing much, then Yamaha 9.9 is the best option due to the large diameter prop they have and extra long shaft option. Having been on Eds GBE, the motor is quiet, grunty and has great grip on the water - but is heavy. Get the longest shaft outboard you can. The standard long shaft is only just long enough for the standard GBE motor pod setup. Its not really an issue as anytime the chop gets too big to motor, its a good time to be sailing!
  22. Pretty sad alright. Interesting that only 3 of the 10 boats with issues where sailing in the event. It suggests racing yachties are better prepared for these situations than the general public?
  23. Knot Me - All documents in a resource consent process are considered "public documents" and are available to be viewed by any members of the public or those involved in the consent process. Also, when you submit a submission, a copy is automatically sent to the applicant. This helps them prepare a response to these points in the hearing. This is normal process and nothing dodgy would be happening here. The council will be well aware that they need to be squeaky clean on this process, as it it likely to be challenged in court. Smithy - you must also remember that the Takapuna-Devonport
