  1. I am doing it. Timewarp, reasonably quick modified boat.
  2. Bazza. one thing about Altex (and probably most other paint companies) is that the price of marine labelled paint is a lot more than the virtually identical product sold for industrial use. In the case of Altex, the industrial paint name is E-line 379. My boat is painted with that, very good results. Also, as a Tauranga resident, if you go to the factory shop, out the back, they have a pile of mis tinted paint, which is seriously cheap. There is a very good chance that there will be a colour that you want. Most of my boat is done with that stuff, and it has saved me hundreds.
  3. I understand you might be a Tauranga person. If so, I have quite a bit of lightweight panel material which might suit, sitting in a garage in Bureta. Do you have old ones for patterns?. If interested, call me, Andy, 021 941 504.
  4. It depends on the wall thickness of the mast. Without backing plates, you will get a bit of wear, but if mast is reasonably thick walled, are unlikely to get splits. I have had my 2.5mm 1x19 wire Zephyr stays set up with hooks, no backing plates, and in 5 seasons of racing at least once a week, there has been about 2 mm of wear. The load on a Zephyr side stay is probably about the same as the average trapeze wire, but the trapeze wire will move round more, thus probably wearing faster.
  5. Once you have the weight proportions, from the resin supplier, for small jobs you can measure very accurately by using small electronic scales, sold on trade me very cheaply. I think they are mostly bought by drug dealers? Next time you have a call from the friendly lads in blue, you may need to explain why you possess some fine white powder, and accurate small scales. The scales are much more accurate than most volume measurements. I just bought 3 at once, as they do break down, but they are accurate when working, and cheap as chips.
