  1. Sorry state of affairs but that's the blame society we've created. "NZ the way we wanted it " if I recall a political slogan from yesteryear. I've rescued a few boats dragging and generally was appreciated. One or two were ho hum but that's OK. Our boat dragged once in the Hauraki Gulf when a wind change of 180 degree put her on a lee shore and we were out fishing with friends. In a crowded bay no one made an effort to do anything but watch and point as she dragged towards the rocks. Luckily we got to her with superb boat handling by our friend and boarded her from weather about 2 mins from d
  2. Here we go again. Like LJ's.....make a law, invoke licensing / registration / FEES ,employ enforcement Nazis, and Fines. Then all will be well ? At least the coffers will be well. And little will change. As a nation we really need to get over the 'big stick ' mentality but it will take a while . Wonder how the 5 days LJ blitz is working out in saving people. Like the road blitz lack of success it's probable that people are refusing to be saved on the water by this legislation. Bah humbug and total nonsense !
  3. Yes...see my post on other Forum topic relating to LJ's
  4. Noted on our cruise this year almost no one wearing LJ's in their inflatables commuting to shore or other boats. Maybe an underground silent civil rebellion is gathering momentum ?... something like the French did against their Nazis
  5. Yes....ocean temperature is way down on what it usually is at this time of year. This has a huge impact on our weather.Thank heavens for global warming though. Otherwise it would be cold......
  6. Because ,like crash helmets in cars, there would be a huge public uproar.Plus getting ID for the ticket in the surf, river, water would be problematic and difficult. Nope, the more that's written about the LJ Nazis the more it becomes apparent it's another revenue stream for Councils. ! And oh so easy too.
  7. Well drbob that's where its at. And that's what some of us are going on about ! Even rowing over to your mates boat in Waikato region ! And their enforcement officers hide in the mangroves to catch innocent boaties in their tenders. LJ Nazis !
  8. Based on all those statistics it's high time all these do gooders (busybodys) started a campaign for compulsory crash helmets in cars. It's a guarantee to save more lives in one year than compulsory lifejackets would save in 100 years. Imagine the acceptance of that ! Women's hair do's upset and that would just be the start of the howls of outrage . When you think about it therefore is it the preservation of life these DG'rs are on about or just building their empire ? ...You're right !
  9. It's hard to understand why people like Kevin would have to be warranted before stepping in to educate them? If genuine in the desire to save people from themselves that should come from the heart, not a warrant ? Sounds like a busybody approach !
  10. None of that either justifies a penalty regime on LJ wearing nor guarantees survival in water incidents .As stated ad nauseam a lot of deaths on water are from hypothermia but get recorded as drowning as an all encompassing statistical entry. IMO the opinions / views expressed here are ,with one exception ,balanced knowledgeable and at the head of the game. LJ's not applicable is not defined either so it's bureaucrats who are deciding the stats from the safety and security of their ivory towers
  11. That's usually the story......a chapter of errors which ,had it ended with a fatality would have been trumpeted in the media / MNZ as "not wearing a LJ" . Which was irrelevant but simplified the explanation. Also note hadn't completed a CG or other formal skippers course. My god no ! Can't figure out how we got through without these qualifications ! Thousands of miles coastal and ocean going and not a scrap of paper amongst us to verify our 'safety'. Oh that's right we took responsibility for ourselves ,learned from experience and used our brains. Now forgotten attributes from a forgotten er
  12. 6 in a 5m boat seems to push the envelope but it depends on the boat design. However in the event it could carry 6 safely and they did end up in the lake, with or without LJ's they would probably have succumbed to hypothermia swallowed water and be recorded as drowning. The real cause of course would have been lack of education (stupidity)overloading, weather factors. Prosecuting and fining this guy probably would not help him but a practical course including on water tuition might help and be ,at least, productive application of the money rather than a fine in the Council coffers.
  13. I was going to respond to Kevin's contention that by not having compulsory LJ laws dickheads were condemned to death. I would have thought that they were attempting suicide with their overloading and foul weather expeditions. But Shedmans response is far more circumspect so I will endorse that instead. For the record is Kevin for real or is he a wind up ?
  14. Tempting but expensive statement @ $300 + $135 court costs plus anything else they will dream up. The LJ Nazis will win evertime. Plus the Council coffers ! It's anarchy
  15. Yeah....its as old as time. Just invoke the legislation little by little. As noted earlier, witness what they've done with swim pools, dogs, guns,et al. They can fail 100 times but only have to succeed once.Following advice on this forum I've acquired mouldy old kapok LJ's to carry on the tender. It's my anti $300 mechanism. Absolute nonsense legislation but you can bet your boots the LJ Nazis will be hitting us because they can identify us in the marinas and most can / will probably pay up. And the dickheads will still drown,LJ or no
  16. Right on MB.Imagine how many lives would be saved on the oceanbeaches if everyone swimming wore a LJ. Especially Piha ! Would cut Surf Life Savers work to a trickle too.Hope the Watersafe people read this forum.
  17. That karldufresne blog summarises the State Control factor well. It's all about State control of the population. This LJ thing will be the same as the lower breatho legislation. The effect is to punish and penalise middle NZ with an added benefit of lots of revenue from fines. Amazing that only 12% drug /alcohol road fatalities. You would think they would focus on the bigger factors.....like slow drivers who never have a crash but cause heaps and incompetence but it's too difficult to prosecute obviously. Breathe into this and you've got no argument ! Likewise LJ's .You've either got it on or you
  18. More LJ nonsense. The trendy lefty 's will keep this up until they win, because they know that how ever many times they lose they only have to win once. Witness swimming pool legislation. They went on for years and years and now these laws are becoming more draconian with 3 yearly inspections and associate costs. We will need to stand firm against LJ compulsion and sadly compulsion won't save those who it is designed to save. May someone save the rest of us from do gooders.
  19. Oh dear !Now I'm being blamed ? Let me tell you good people there's nothing wrong with being an armchairadmiral. No cold dark scary nights in big seas .No falling off waves, and you can have a hot roast dinner ,hot shower and a warm steady bed. Wish I'd had someone like NZL1 to alert me to the error of my ways when I started sailing. Might have taken up stamp collecting instead ! And I've survived all manner of experiences with not even a day skippers license. But out there doing it seemed OK.
  20. This non story epitomises the state of modern media. Emergency services advised ? Amazing there wasn't an Orion sent out. If this is the standard of modern journalism Trump will be a fantastic President, the sun revolves around the flat earth and Israel becomes part of Palestine ! Bahhhhhhh humbug
  21. Thanks GW.Yes we are working on it. The major problem is cost. The boat is probably woth $14000 on a good day.It will be easy to do $3 - 4000 if we aren't very careful. Looking at a glassed ply board as one solution .A patch job if there's sufficient steel to weld to another. Not rushing into it.Have roughly bogged it meantime.
  22. Extremely interesting thx guys. Wheels, what is the top oil you referred to?
  23. Back on the help wanted page please. Had an email back from Alan Wright and he was unable to help. Seems the builders took over everything and being about 30 years ago all info has disappeared. But somewhere someone will know where and how the centreboards were made so we will keep looking. Could save a heap of anguish. Cheers
