  1. Welcome Aboard Paxfish, I'm sure you'll find plenty of support from the 8.5m guys! Just remember, there are no dumb questions, don't be afraid to ask anything about your boat or general sailing. Good on you for buying an "unusual" boat for where you are, I'm sure you'll have heaps of fun!
  2. Yes, and you are right, but many people seem unable to grasp the fact, and see the funds as "given" to ETNZ and therefore wasted. Apparently the Govt redeemed the whole lot in Taxes alone from ETNZ and the other AC teams that were here training/visiting etc. Hard to keep everyone happy - a bit like moderating this forum!
  3. Easy way to post all the pics is in gallery. I was thinking of copying all these pics into a multihull gallery... I'll get onto that tomorrow. I'll also look into those missing pics on page 3 and 5 ....
  4. I guess you can import it without the rig! Not worth much rig-less, so duty etc not much. Pleased to see it was not insurance fraud then!!
  5. In my experience, the single best improvement you can make to your boats charging system is a smart regulator. There is one made here in NZ, which I did not know about. Here is some info, by Graeme Polley from smartregulator.co.nz; _________________________________________________________________ “Smart Charging” Back story My professional background is in aeronautical engineering, but one of my passions is boating. After experiencing battery charging problems in my own launch and suffering the premature failure of many batteries, I started researching why. I sent a battery
  6. That being said, There are more production boats out there cruising than anything else. MOST make it home fine. You read of a few issues a year, (with both production and custom boats!) often poorly reported, with little or no background info as to the boat's history. Remember that there are currently over 10,000 boats out of their home countries, cruising, right now. (I can't remember where that figure comes from, so it could be wrong). A late model production boat may have a shorter life span than an older/heavier boat. The engineering has developed to the level where they know how many stre
  7. Most small (ish) modern designs that were purpose designed to cross oceans are performace boats. So forgiveness for an inexperienced crew might be an issue. The Mini Transats come to mind - small, designed for singlehanding and crossing oceans. NOT a cruising boat! Class 40's are another. Maybe a Pogo 30?? All these may frighten a beginner!!
  8. Agreed. Looks like an interesting place, but without local knowledge and with around 2m draft, I'd want flat conditions, at least the first time!
  9. Every person has their own level of acceptable risk that they are comfortable with. When shorthanded, or single handed, the proper management of fatigue is but one of the things you must manage. Personally I have done, and am likely to continue to do, single handed passages. Two handed is often harder - as most crews then try to keep a 24 hour watch, most of the time. This, of course, is not possible single handed. If 2 handed, fatigue in the first few days as you get used to the routine can be difficult. Its easier if both are capable of running the boat, so the other can get decent sleep.
  10. Yup, next year when I've got decent sails again, I'll be into The Anzac 200!!
  11. Welcome aboard. The Cav 32 is a good boat. I'm sure you'll get lots of replies, but on a fine weekend it might not be until Monday! What you are planning is certainly achievable. Be careful and thorough in your inspection of your preferred vessel, and make sure you get a survey! There are not a lot of 32 footers I'd go offshore in, but the cav 32 is one! Good luck with your search, and post your prospective vessels up here if you want some comments! Cheers Matt
  12. This topic is what the gallery section is for - do you want to make a public gallery for multihull pics? Then post these in...
  13. Good story Steve, I had to google it to find out where that is!! The image on Google earth is scary, but this pic is better!
  14. I reckon RNZ is HARDER than the Solo Tasman. Although not solo for RNZ I guess...
  15. IF it is actually stolen. I guess I'm getting cynical with age, but my first reaction is that a boat for sale for some time, then when no sales are forthcoming is "stolen" seems a bit suspicious to me. Of course, it COULD be genuine, it just seems a bit suspect to me.
  16. SD, might see you there. Looks like SW for the weekend...
  17. Oh, and by the way, I'm ordering 8 Airheads as a trial. Shipping costs yet to be confirmed, but expect the sale price to be approx $1400 NZD. Should have them in a month. First in first served.
  18. I'll tip the urine overboard if out, and in the marina toilet if in a marina. "Solid" waste in a composting bag in the rubbish skip or on the gardens. It really does look like soil, and has no smell.
  19. actually the composting heads are not so bad. if you wet the bowl with a water spray bottle, there is no reason to use the "coffee filter". There is only the lever to press for number 2's - urine will go to the bottle without doing anything. Then crank the handle to "flush". This video might help;
  20. Same BP. No hull breach, just no rig, and only a couple of hundred miles out. I'd like to know more.... I would have thought she could have motored home, or in to another port - must be something we don't know!
  21. From Sailing Anarchy; rainmaker From Gunboat’s Peter Johnstone… RAINMAKER was dismasted today 36 hours into her passage out of the Gunboat yard about 200 miles SE of Hattaras. From the very brief and patchy sat phone call, and various brief texts, the following is all we have been told: *Everyone is accounted for aboard, including the owner, his son, and three professional crew. *The rig was promptly cut away. *The boat was not holed. *At the last update there were no injuries. Conditions are evidently quite severe. It is not uncommon for the cold NW winds to accelerate over the Gulf
  22. A decent portaloo is called an airhead!
  23. I have the option for an Airhead dealership. I'm Considering it, and bringing some in on spec. Probably decide this week. If I could get fixed orders for a few, it would make the decision easier. Pm me if you are interested.
