  1. Hi Team, I have a carbon fibre spinnaker pole. The clear coat on the outside is coming off and every time we use it you end up itching for days afterwards. I'm guessing it will need a sand back to remove remaining clear coat or whatever it is, but I'm wondering what do I use to seal the surface? Cheers Tim
  2. I have a vesper. They work well, especially the networking ability. You can use the wifi to network all your instrumentation through it which is pretty cool. In my case all instruments via NMEA2000 then out via wifi to ipad. Works well, Remember you don't need to have the tablet if you don't want to, i.e. it still works if not connected. You need something to set it up but the external alarm I have connected to it is pretty loud in the event i'm on a collision course with another boat. The only bitch I have with it is that if the ipad turns off, then it takes some time to recon
  3. Wheels you are right on there. The main issue is that we hardly run the motor preferring to sail everywhere. Therefore we are relying on two solar panels to keep batteries charged. That is not been helped by the reduced output from the alternator, however my main concern is that this was all working back in NZ but the alternator output has reduced. Anyhow I'll get up there and take a look and sort it. Arrive tomorrow, can't wait to get out of the cold weather!!
  4. Thanks IT will do the checks with a volt meter on Wednesday. Remember the boat has been lived on full time since 2012 so plenty of battery cycles there.
  5. So just heard from last owner batteries were new in 2012 hence potential problems I'd suggest.... I'd consider these old? My battery isolator is some fangled thing that says no or very low charge voltage loss, one of these: http://www.studer-innotec.com/en/products/battery-splitters-mbi-series-12-24v/ Manual says "The Battery Isolator has no voltage drop when the batteries are fully charged. This is achieved by using the latest electronic technologies, other diode splitters have at least a voltage drop of 0,7 Volt and at a high charging current this voltage drop can reach 1,5 Volt.
  6. Keep in mind here I have a system that is all the same brand and has been designed to work together. It's all mastervolt gear. Anyhow nothing like getting up there and taking a look, I suspect it's the batteries as age is unknown.
  7. Thanks guys, I suspect it's batteries really, but they load tested just fine, charge ok on the shore charger hence the doubt. I am thinking that the temp sensors probably need investigation first which I will do to make sure I'm getting good feedback and they are attached properly. I can test this by tricking the charge regulator to accept a lower temp for a short period and see if the amps go up but the volts would indicate that at 13.6 I have an issue as I think this should be over 14V. Wait till i'm there then start the process
  8. Great stuff, yip have clamp meter and have measured output and it's within .5 amp of what me amp meter on the boat says they they are charging at. Temperature sensors are mounted on the top of the batteries. Batteries are Gel type Mastervolts. I'm up there later this week will fault find and get back to the experts!
  9. Guys, I need help to fault find a battery issue. Setup is: 2 x Mastervolt 160 Amp hour batteries 1 x Mastervolt Alpha Pro Regulator 1 x Mastervolt Alpha 90 Alternator 1 x Battery Splitter and brand new start battery So the problem is this, Alternator used to charge batteries at approx. 80 amps no stress at all depending on RPM. Now i'm only getting 30 to 40 amps. Voltage sensing wire is wired to house batteries so it's getting the correct voltage, the regulator seems to work ok too, certainly no fault lights etc. So I have made sure and the alternator is chargin
  10. I got one made for a 44 ft boat last year by Norths I think it was $1600 or maybe a little less BUT not a lot of thought went into chafe. For instance around clutches on the mast, a very good idea is to have white pvc sewed on the inside around wear points which will stop the fabric from being worn.
  11. I think it's a common problem in the marine industry especially if you are not overseeing the work yourself. It leaves the contractor to make decisions when you are not there. KM is right though communication is everything. I'd rather know the bad news that i'm up for more money or a late delivery rather than have to find out when something does not arrive or you get an invoice for twice the amount.   12. Everyone is different, but i'm not sure I agree with you SM about the wires. Properly done, wires last a long time - 20 years or more. Wireless is the future though. Just look at where the world is going, also less weight aloft etc etc, just saying. A wire fault can't be fixed at sea in most cases if it's in the mast, a wireless puk can be replaced in a matter of minutes.   16. By the time you've commissioned and tickled her into NZ spec, brought sails and got to Cat 1, probably another 30-35K so that gets us too 235K on the startline. Yeah right!   17. That's because I believe most yacht clubs are run by old farts who are not in touch with young people and yachting. Put someone in their 20's in a position of control at a yacht club and see what happens. I don't know that there are no 17/18 year olds with yachts but even at 20k that's a lot of money for most early 20's people when they have other priorities such as paying off student loans and spending money on travel. Oh and buying or trying to buy a house. Auckland is the dream for most people buy why not just head South where housing is more affordable and the lifestyle is better. Comm

  20. So I've sailed most of NZ and done Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Cal where does one sail after visiting these countries i.e. Countries and areas I can sail easily from NZ. Any ideas? Need to head somewhere next year and this year we have found the Pacific a bit boring after doing it several times. Somewhere that provides something a bit different, was thinking Tasmania but open to ideas.   22. Guys, I need to source some Lithium Ion batteries. We are looking at getting them out of the US as the pricing is so much cheaper than the usual robbers here, however has anyone got a good contact or source here for them? I'm looking for a 12V 300 amp hour battery x 3 off.
  23. Again IT is right show the examples of boats being stopped. What I see here is a lot of "I heard from a mate" stuff. The reality is that by saying stuff that may or may not be factual it just makes a good situation worse. I can tell you based on fact the following. I was in an anchorage yesterday with 4-5 other kiwi yachts in Tonga and we all had different inspectors who had different things that for them was a hot point, and of course it's boat dependant. For instance we don't have a working jib but we do have a good furled No3 and a storm jib - acceptable for our yacht easily drive

  25. They don't take your cat 1 cert they take a photo of it and that's it. As IT says clearing customs is the last thing you do. There is just so much BS on here about Cat 1. I thought this was meant to be a resource rather than a bunch of BS.
