Given the costs and regulations around setting up and operating SSB and potentially a better sat situation coming with Iridium Next in the near future, I think I'd be leaning towards just an SSB receiver to go with a sat phone and an inReach or a Yellowbrick.

Wonder how many are still fitting SSB these days as more and more cruisers seem to be using options like Iridium Go, inReach or a Yellowbrick as offshore communication options?
  3. I should add I can weld marine grade alloy so that has an impact on my preference.
  4. I'd still prefer alloy. A lot the modern exploration type yachts are built in alloy these days. As mentioned previously it is quite malleable so can take a substantial hit without always splitting open. Temporary hull damage(penetration) could still be dealt with epoxy and with a genny and mig onboard more permanent repairs could be done. In some ways, alloy is like working with hardwood with respect to cutting, drilling and routing. This is an Alubat Ovni that got cosy with a reef in the Canaries and was later repaired to like new condition.
  5. One of the things I love about aluminium is the ease of repair and modifications, It's nice to work with, especially if you have a good MIG properly set up for it and it's easy to finish.
  6. Every material has pros and cons but my personal favourite these days is now aluminium but it's not that common or cheap, especially for yachts in my price range.
  7. Yes, as I said it's from a few years ago but his outlook is generally more about fact based risk versus feeling like you're safer and not taking appropriate measures which may be more or less than racing regs require. He also has strong feelings on life rafts too. I like to see a range of opinions and the reasons behind them so I can form my position. For example, I've seen differing points of view on the need or not for lifelines. One position is that they can create a false sense of security but quite often fail under a load of a body falling against them but without them, people take m
  8. It's always interesting to see how experienced offshore sailors perceive the benefits or lack thereof in the racing regs with respect to safety. I've attached a pdf with some thoughts from Evans Starzinger on the ORC Cat 1 racing rules from a few years ago that I found interesting. Evans Starzinger - Thoughts on Cat 1.pdf
  9. And yes, trying to get decent information from them can be a *#%*&@ pain!
  10. Brokers pricing can be set by an unrealistic vendor. The broker gets a listing which they need so they look like they are active and have stock. The broker knows it's not likely to sell at that price but then relies on zero interest and/or lowball offers to educate the vendor to more realistic market pricing. I have been asked by brokers to submit lowball offers on yachts in which I have shown interest in the hope that the vendor will become more realistic but I'm not interested in playing games with unrealistic vendors.
  11. I thought they were a virtual club that offers a Certificate of Ownership. Have you got more details on the registration as I thought Germany required proof of residency for Yacht Registration?
  12. Aesthetically it would look better lower and longer and by extending the roof you could add some roll down canvas sides for added protection when required. I would add raised lips on the trailing edges (top & sides) to help deal with water running across it and onto you plus it would provide a better grip for hanging on to. I would also move the handrails further inboard so that you can still use them if necessary more comfortably on the leeward side when heeled over.
  13. Aside from avoiding the Cat 1 costs, the initial registration is cheaper in Langkawi (RM1,140 initial reg. + RM380 for 1yr + Agents Fee) but a fraction dearer if the costs for the first five years are totaled compared to NZ($1,090). Langkawi renewals are cheaper and are yearly(RM380), not for 5 years like NZ. Registering in Jersey(£440) is also cheaper than NZ for members of the Commonwealth but requires a Tonnage Survey for the initial registration and the renewals are also very cheap (£100 for 10 years). Jersey also requires you to have a Representative Person for a small fee.
  14. I think there are also generational issues at play and Baby Boomers have been impacting society for years. What they have wanted, are accustomed to and can afford versus more recent generations is not the same and the amount of free time people have has changed a lot also. The more recent generations tend to work longer hours and have less DIY knowledge/experience of doing maintenance on almost anything with today's approach to disposable goods and the need for instant gratification. Jumping in an RV, staying at an Airbnb or getting on a plane for overseas travel is so much simpler than dealin

    Need a good idea

Like Ed said, sand with Wet and Dry and use epoxy instead of water. Look at Bamboo bike building for some wrapping inspiration around the BB.

    Electronics options?

Thanks Matt, love to take you up on the offer to have a look at your setup when I'm back in the country.

    Electronics options?

Thanks IT, I've been seeing a lot of positive comments for Vesper AIS. I'm not an expert with tech but I'm reasonably comfortable with learning what I need to. I like the idea of a PC having decent sized touch screens and using OpenCPN with SAS.Pilot and Google Earth to overlay satellite images. Pros and cons of 3G v 4G radar? I must admit I find the idea of having forward scan sonar quite attractive for areas that aren't charted that well. Can the Silentwind blades to fitted to other wind generators? I just came across the Pelagic autopilot, any knowledge of it? https://pelagi
  19. If you had a blank slate what electronics would you install today? Think suitable for single and short handed sailing including offshore and keeping it budget friendly. Would you have a PC with OpenCPN and build a system or buy a brand based system with an MFD? All individual components or some that do a combo like a VHF with AIS and GPS? What would you have for redundancy/backups? Wifi or wired wind sensor?
  20. Thanks IT, going over the top sounds like it would be a really interesting trip. If I go ahead I'll be in touch about it. Haven't bought yet, looking and talking at the moment. Yes, the Metalu Diam 40 attracted my eye too. It has a lot going for it for the money. Also, more boats are turning up for sale in Tahiti and Noumea at this time of year.
  21. What would be the best time and route to sail from Langkawi to Auckland?
  22. Seems like the only Kiwi entered is on the waitlist so may or may not get the chance to race.
  23. $200 for the certificate, the inspector's fee and the haul out?
