Island Time 1,246
Here is a little warning. The other day I decided I should get out my sextant, and do a practice sight or two, as it has been quite some time (3-4 years) since I last did one. Always thought the sextant and tables were available, so I should be Ok if offshore and had a complete power meltdown, or the GPS system went down etc. So, got the sextant out to find that the foam in the box had disintegrated, and the sextant was unusable as the silvering on the mirrors was knackered!!! So, my final resort for nav was completely useless! Lucky to find out on shore... It's only a plastic sextant (Davis Mk15), and I'd thought nothing could go wrong with it!! So, that equipment you don't use much should be removed and inspected every now and then - drogues, parachutes, grab bag stuff, storm sails, sextant, tables, paper charts etc - actually removed from the cases/bags and checked, not just aboard! New mirrors are now enroute from the states.
tuffyluffy 76
Sextant? Is that something from the history books?

Fish 0
How do you keep your tables in date? I thought the site reduction tables for Air nav cost a fortune and are only relevant for 1 year?
Black Panther 1,599
The tables are forever, the almanac comes out annually. The tables for stars (not sun) are good for 5(?) years.
