Somewhere "near" Auckland, can be 5 hours or more. 1hr if you are lucky, and the sat is in range, the RCC get onto it immediately, as do local resources, and a rescue boat is nearby and available. That info is directly from the police maritime rescue unit in Auckland. VHF or flares are better if you can. We will have a geostationary sat and 100% coverage in a year or two I understand.
