Crazyhorse 47
A new neighbour, awesome 41 foot cutter with stick on antifoul moved in next door. A fair bit has peeled and some barnies on it but otherwise clean. Has been water blasted when the pic was taken. The owner Wade said shes been in the water at Opua since December last year. Heard of this stuff but never seen it before. Looks like the felt on a pool table.
chariot 244
If it is peeling after 8 months that's not that flash.
Fish 0
looks like its got as many barnacles on it as copper coat over the same time. Especially since the photo is after its been water blasted...
Crazyhorse 47
Since there is interest, will get some closeup pics tomorrow assuming its not bloody raining again.
Crazyhorse 47
Wade did say it has issues with travel lift straps, they pull on it when lifting which puts in wrinkles which is why hes hauling out at Norsand.
Crazyhorse 47
More pics this morning. (Never seen oysters on a hull before?)

Crazyhorse 47
It is MPSNZ. The picture on their website is Wades yacht. https://www.nzmps.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/20171029_165049-1.jpg Exciting stuff! Essentially its worked but I think the fibres need to be longer? Seems growth can still get a bit of a foothold but when you consider she sat in barnie soup off Opua since last december, thats not bad! The propspeed gives a indication of the level of fouling. ex Elly 220
The barnacles are horrendous at Opua. One boat recently scraped of 10kgs of barnacles after sitting on a swing mooring there for only a few months over summer.
MarkMT 68
I gather this is the Flow Fouling product rather than the Silikon that Redline has? If it has a felt-like surface, what does that do to drag?
Fish 0
If it has a felt-like surface, what does that do to drag? I'd imagine it behaves the same way, hydrodynamically, as about 3 months worth of slime on a hard painted hull...
Crazyhorse 47
Just asked, no noticeable loss of speed. Maybe like fish skin it sets up eddies? I did notice when hauling out before water blasting she was brown with slime and they had just sailed down from the BoI.

Frank 157
The broker at Opua told me they have a particular problem with oyster growth on hulls something to do with the oyster farms abandoned a few years ago.
Frank 157
They keep trying https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/27/science/barnacles-ships-coating.html?action=click&module=MoreInSection&pgtype=Article®ion=Footer&contentCollection=Science&login=email&auth=login-email
