bigal.nz 59
Absolutely shocking what these Chinese developers are prepared to do to the enviroment for financial gain. https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/south-pacific/111930696/surfers-who-helped-stop-an-environmental-disaster Good on the surfers for fighting them! Fish 0
Thats only half of it. Last week Freesoul got a couple of highly respected NZ journos arrested (held overnight). Shocking state of affairs. The journalists were detained by Fijian police after they went to the Freesoul office in Suva to put questions to its director Dickson Peng. They were freed after Fiji’s Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama intervened. https://www.newsroom.co.nz/2019/04/04/521015/newsroom-journalists-detained-in-fiji
MarkMT 68
Thanks for the links. It is appalling, but not just for what the developer has done. The fact that they got away with it until the NZ media got involved shows that there is essentially no real rule of law or private property rights in Fiji. A cautionary tale. Fish 0
This morning's installment on Newsroom: The videos in these stories are well worth watching. https://www.newsroom.co.nz/2019/04/11/531845/when-the-villagers-cried-enough Environmental damage caused by Freesoul Real Estate has severely impacted the village’s fishing grounds. Village women traditionally harvested mud crabs and clams in the area to eat and to sell in the markets. Now raw sewage discharged into the mangroves and foreshore from workers on the site prevents them collecting the valuable seafood. Ecologically important mangroves have been cleared to make way for boardwalks, and silt washing down from earthworks has caused serious damage. “One of our ladies went diving there last week and she saw all the reef dead, all the coral die because of what they have done digging all the place up even though they have been told not to do it They’ve spoiled the mangroves and everything,” says Orisi Vukinavanua, the village chief. Rubbing salt into the wound is the fact that the resort is being built on the clan’s own land.
