chariot 243
Been out to see the arrival of the HMD Endeavour, Spirit of NZ and a Waka into Mercury Bay this morning. All quite spectacular. Quite a few boats out to see them including the immaculate Puff. Sorry I didn't get close enough to get a photo of the Dragon.

harrytom 648
What is with all the dramatics over the re enactment of the Endeavor??it is not the first time Endeavor has done this voyage. I have a photo on the wall of the Endeavour sailing down the east coast back in the 90s.
harrytom 648
The Endeavour replica has visited New Zealand in the past, with the most extensive visit being an 11-port tour in summer 1995-96. Most recently the ship visited New Zealand on the return leg of a second world voyage, this was in March 2005. The ship has not been to New Zealand since ownership of the vessel moved from the HM Bark Endeavour Foundation to the Australian National Maritime Museum in April 2005. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/bay-of-plenty-times/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503343&objectid=12271237 no outrage back then, why start today??
Deep Purple 512
Because it's 250 years to the day that Cook landed in Whitianga and met with the Maoris. It's just a bonus that Endeavour was here to mark it

Priscilla II 392
“What is with all the dramatics over the re enactment of the Endeavor?” For the descendants of the original inhabitants of Aotearoa the Endeavour replica represents a symbol of murder rape and the spread of disease.A harbinger to the loss of lands subjugation and disenfranchisement in their papatuanuku. Had to larf that it is Jenny Shipley heading up Tuia 250 as she is so well experienced in the dark art of ripping off others re the Mainzeal debacle. Did she ever pay that fine. chariot 243
Forget the political crap. I still enjoyed the day and the crew from the Waka certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves in Whitianga last night.
Island Time 1,239
If it had not been the English, it would have been the French, and things would have been worse for the Maori. You cannot judge actions of the past with standards from the present. 5
Priscilla II 392
So do you square away the ongoing inequalities and socio economic deprivation that Maori still encounter today by using the passage of time as a excuse.

Shouldn't this be in small talk?
Island Time 1,239
Back on topic please, probably my fault for the digression. If you wish to discuss the politics of this, please start another thread. This one will be for the marine aspect only.
