ex Elly 258
Sounds like a delivery gone wrong. Owner is not happy with delivery skipper... mcp 34
The Skipper (Horse) was living on a debilitated motor launch on a mooring near Port Nikau at Whangarei. Known for his tall tails and frequent consumption of electric puha. I had meet him a few times and I would suggest he has very limited idea of what he was doing. My GUESS...is he got scared and didn't know what to do.

wheels 544
"Well off course". Yep,well off course is right. This smells fishy. Leaving Lyttleton (or heading to) puts you a hell of a long way off that beach. From memory, I think the furthest out is like 80Nm if you make a straight line course for the top of the South. It would be far better to have turned back to Lyttleton or head for Motonau Island if weather was a big issue. The last place I would ever head was in toward that beach, If the weather was bad enough that far out, the breakers on the beach would be suicide. If they survived the Beaching, then the weather would not have been that bad.
Fish 0
Did you say fishy Wheels? They didn't leave from Lyttleton. They left from Akaroa, apparently... David "Crazy Horse" Atkinson says while trying to leave Canterbury's Akaroa Harbour, he and his crew had to battle "big swells"
wheels 544
Akaroa? Well that makes the story even weirder then.
