Bottom End this weekend?

Don’t know the bottom end of Waiheke that well and looking for ideas for this w/e. With the f’cast suggesting SW for Sat and then SE/E for Sun one tempting option is another Barrier run. But for a change of scene thought maybe bottom end. Somewhere like Hooks Bay or Man O War is presumably well sheltered from SW but if it swings SE/E overnight what are the best options down there?

Hooks Bay is known for its persistant roll ... even when it should be sheltered. Its best in very setttled weather. Man o'War might be a better bet given that its due to back into the SE ... then you can hop across to Chamberlain's Bay at Ponui or Shark Bay might be better.

Man o'War has the advantage of having a wine tasting facility on shore run by the Man o'War Vineyard .... some of their wines are very nice. :) You can get a bit of a roll in Man o'War too, but there are several spots in close vicinity that means you can get out of the roll .... including sneaking inside the mussel farm. There's also a good walk up to Stony Batter for some exercise if you get inspired.

Chamberlain's Bay aka North Harbour will be the obvious choice as it is sheltered from all the above conditions

If you are contemplating Barier then Coromandel should also be considered as its about the same distance for you and you would get a nice reach across with a run home, I would consider either east side of Rabit or Waimate or depends when the wind swings Deep Cove.

I'd agree with Danaide, Chamberlains (North Harbour) is the best for sitting out a blow from the SW. I have never had any luck with Man o'War in anything but the lightest of conditions. I find that you get a persistent roll and you get the wind accelerating down the hills. It is also the bay where a lot of the big smelly boats hang out so in summer at least, you end up with it lit up like a Christmas tree, have lots of music and plenty of Gen sets running 24 x 7 :( . There are some nice bays just South thou if you tuck yourself right up against Waiheke. Once the wind turns SE you pretty much have your pick of the western bays along Ponui e.g Sharks. If it turns as light as Windguru is forecasting, you might even be able to tuck up into Drunks bay Rotoroa for the day and go for a nice walk around the Island.

We have just got home. We were in Chamberlains bay last night along with many others. It blew hard, but no ruffstuff and no rolling.

A long slow slog home though. It took us 8hrs with wind hard on the nose and we had to pinch hard all the way along Waiheke to Motohuie. Just crawling along. Then final leg was motor only from Motohuie against tide all the way home. 4hrs it took. No that's just from Motohuie. 8hrs total.
