philstar 62
bad taste- darwins theory in action methinks. 1 step short of a darwin award. if he was obeying the rules and doing 5 knots within 100m of land then he'd be fine!! from personal experience there are plenty of lights in that area. OYSTR 1
bad taste- darwins theory in action methinks. 1 step short of a darwin award.if he was obeying the rules and doing 5 knots within 100m of land then he'd be fine!! from personal experience there are plenty of lights in that area. Was thinking the same. Other than the idjit possibility I thought maybe a broken throttle?
Guest
dont know if it's changed but (circa 1993) the inner lights were a lot brighter than the outer ones and never having entered there before damn near did similar
Fogg 427
The entrance to GH is fine at night. In addition to the red & green at the end of the breakwater right at the entrance itself, there is a pair of red & green posts a few 100m S of the entrance which act as a leading line. Hardly anyone uses them and most people cut the corner (as this guy did) and certainly at that angle you are not gonna see the red & green nicely set up as you'd expect them. Sure there is some light 'noise' from the marina in the background but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 2 sets of red & greens guiding you in. Unless for some reason one (or more) were extinguished - in which case that would be a mitigating factor.
Guest
Isn't there a leading light as well? Even knowing I can cut the corner, at night I'd be tempted to do it "by the book".
Fogg 427
Yes in addition to the r&g poles a few 100m S of the entrance and then the entrance itself with r&g on the breakwaters, there is a 3rd source of assistance in the form of a leading light to help you maintain your line in the centre of the fairway as you come into the breakwater. Lots of assistance if you know how to read lights.
