  1. I think I've found the problem! The alternator relies on the fan to draw air through it, there is no other source of cooling for ours (to be CHANGED!). RAN the buggar just a while ago this morning for about 15 minutes at about 1200rpm and 40 amps at 14.5v. After about 5 mins, my hand on it, it started to warm up, I could feel hot air coming out of it. Bought the revs up to 2K and she cooled down! More air being drawn through the alternator. So, if our batts are low from over night, obviously the alternator is going to be under more load to start off with so idle is the killer? I am sure its
  2. Glass can be sanded and faired to look quite good (Lots of googlies on Crazyhorse hidden by glass!! hehe). This idea will effect your mount for the Bruce anchor but decreasing the bobstay angle? The way it is the bobstay angle is a bit too acute to stop upward movement. Not seeing a pic of the sprit underneath, where the bobstay anchor is, that could be lengthened a bit to give it a better pull downwards. (Looks like it's only us and IT on in here not making the most of the boxing day sales!!)
  3. Bobstay, yep. Bobkin on the stern...silly me. I like the current setup you have, just needs to strenghtened. Where the two bolts have gone through the deck is not where the main loading should be unless the other 4 load points have failed, probably by being hit. Is the steel supporting tube bent? I've just done this k8nd of repair myself. The pulpit got smacked, we assume by the friday panmure regatta guys trying to tac up the Tamaki and leaving the turn too late! It ripped the deck up under the pulpit anchoring plate but in our case it was ply. Was easily enough fixed, no scarfing required. P
  4. Fitting a strongback from the deck plate to the keel would help. I'm wondering why the bobkin isn't taking most of the strain. As freedom said, the stress on the deck should be minimal where the planks bolt through the deck. It looks like its either been hit or the forestay has pulled the bobkin up? Check the sprit metal work for any bending.
  5. Looks like bow sprit that incorporates a anchor roller? Do you have a photo of the bow sprit?
  6. Where did you get it? Looked on line and can't find anything.. I think you and IT are right, need to go to a heat capable alternator.
  7. Thanks. I keep an eye on the volts when underway anyway, more so since it tried cooking. When I ran it at 30amps the fan was extracting the heat OK but I am now thinking whatever else I get from Graeme I will fit a blower to the rear of it and a temp alarm! Probably a good idea to have all round in the engine bay. Fashion a cowling out of fibreglass to go over it.
  8. I think this is our culprit. A bosch universal 120ah.
  9. Wow! Thanks but all good til Graeme has caught enough fish and gets back to work again at "smart regulator". Have decided to buy one of his refurbished alts and ask him to send that to us then return this to see whats gone wrong, get it repaired and keep it as a spare. It still charges at 14.1v 30amps so cloudy days we can still keep the beer chilled! Currently tucked in around Butlers Point in Mangonui then soon off to Houhora but I like your offer, much appreciated! Glad to see the bloody rain has gone.Dam, just re-read your post. What is the clone!? I searched everywhere before getting the
  10. I can smell the smoke already!! It's a 120amp alternator and its maxing out at 40 amps which means only one phase is operating? Makes sense...it's toast! There is a slight back current leaking through the rectifier so my thinking is diodes. Only lasted 150.7 engine hours! Brand new.
  11. Point taken but he never mentioned yacht and we do loads of fishing (more catching would be nice...), the price was right, Simrad after sales service is awesome and the NSS7 EVO2 works like a charm. I 'spose anything that isn't raymarine is a good start!
  12. Thanks for looking at this Matt. Below is what I sent to Graeme this morning: Before starting the engine I put the clamp meter over the +'ve and discovered a residual current of 0.3amps so I think a diode has gone faulty current shouldn't flow back through it? Started the engine with batteries floating voltage at 12.3. I put a clamp meter over the output and charging at 34amps, 13.7v. Left it there and alternator just warm. Wound potentiometer up to 14.0v and charge rose to 39amps. Freezer switched on and alternator immediately began over heating and voltage dropped to 13.8. I quickly
  13. Navman are quite old and the price you paid for the charts leads me to think they will have 3D depth etc that the old Nav won't display. Soon is the time to be jolly as all the post Xmas bargains come out next month so track down a decent SIMRAD or Lawrence MFD. If you get the "gofree" wifi doover, its great with smart phones being able to plot waypoints from the bunk with a beer and better still, it can connect to wifi hotspots to update charts and firm wear. Go c-map, in my opinion far superior, we have both and not impressed with Navionics attitude. Navionics turns their "features" off if
  14. Something strange going on. Our 120amp bosch alternator runs OK at first then the voltage drops, so does the current and it starts heating up...lots. It's controlled by one of Graemes ZM4s so been in touch with him but would love to get some ideas from the experts in here? We did have the battery sense wire 250ma fuse pop a few weeks ago so Graeme said put a 1amp in which we did and also crimp soldered the battery sense wire direct to a main battery cable. I am pretty sure the bosch is toast. Maybe one of the diodes has popped but it seems strange that over night voltage drops to 12.2 (with al
  15. Probably, Navionics? Cmap? Can up date on line with a PC or a dealer can do it.
  16. Don't bother with Russell wharf. The water comes from the caravan park and is tank supply. They took the tap off to stop arse0les from turning it on a leaving it running then some 'nice' people did the same with a spanner so the whole thing has been removed. Deep Water Cove has good water stbd side as you go on from a small stream.
  17. A crooked lawyer!!? Really?.....
  18. ....and no...it's not fishnet...before Fish asks!
  19. We are working on it, NZ finally exported one of Aussies crims back to them! https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/108868426/australian-cruise-passenger-denied-entry-to-new-zealand-and-sent-home Hope the turkey and cake goes well. Got my stocking bungy'd to the mast!
  20. I wonder....anyone tried rap on barnicles!??. "Ice Coffee" M&Flem" "Halfa Quid" could be on to something here!? I would volunteer to help keep them underwater to see if it does!????.
  21. I still think an underwater speaker playing rap...!
  22. Refer to the words in enclosed brackets. Only trouble is1000mw lasers can no longer be sold. Gets rid of seagulls too off finger berths.
  23. I know they hate blue lasers!....( don't ask how I know..)
