  1. Thornbury Sailing Club. About 11m top to bottom, runs at about 8 knots both ways. On the really big tides we used to sandbag along the top of the seawall, and would often get water into the ground floor of the clubhouse. (The white building in the background) And at half tide it looks like this. At high tide you can sail over all that land over the creek, and you stop REALLY fast when you hit those ridges. This is the end result of the Bristol channel/Severn River forcing it's way into a tiny channel of outgoing water. Top photo by Graham Horn, sailing photo
  2. I am doing a restore job on a $10 P. I have all the bits required to make her shipshape except a mast. It came with a wooden one but that got exposed to far too much UV. Any condition Ali P mast wanted. 021-260 9822 if you can help, text preferred as I spend my time driving for a living. Cheers, Aaron.
  3. A sugary environment can help the nasties to thrive tho. Which is probably why my teeth were slightly better when I ate nothing but meat for a while, because I pretty much lived on sugar free soft drinks.
  4. Oh, and I once ate all meat for a whole year, yes my teeth were ok but I have since gained 25kg as soon as I started eating a balanced diet. Now I have major weight and health issues, so be careful whose advice you believe. I also hold a degree in sports coaching including psych and nutrition.
  5. Almost. Even that much abused but very smart man Dr Atkins freely admitted that eating all meat was a dumb idea. All sugars are bad but not all carbs are sugars. Eating too larger amounts of red meat is thought to be a primary driver of bowel cancer. Good carbs are mostly green leafy vegetables, Avoid starchy stuff like spuds. Yes dentistry can be pretty much removed from your life, xylitol toothpaste can help repair existing damage, but I'd rather have a Chelsea bun and pay for a dentist!
  6. After a bit of searching, I've found her on google maps, and requested a "historical landmark" icon called "Stratosphere wreck" be placed at the location. Apparently it takes a few days to appear on the web. In the meantime, here are the approximate map co-ordinates, 1.853074, -157.547120
  7. I started to search the web, but outboards bore me so instead of just being bored, I quickly became really really bored! Thank heaven for websites like this one!

Speed wise they're apparently close to a Noelex 22, but in the few times we sailed against one we (Noelex) were quite a bit quicker.
  9. I guess that would depend on how much free beer and sausages were at the finish line. And how the results were worked out. Using racetrack would give all the slow boats (like mine) a good chance of getting in amongst it all. And simple courses, not everyone likes to push the boat handling aspect.
  10. Work is slowly progressing on the foil repairs. This was end of last week, I haven't heard anymore since then. This one broke about 20cm inside the case. Cross section... Fortunately the other board only had a small bite missing at the tip. A little epoxy and she'll be fine.
  11. Is there an up to date register of local boats? Perhaps we could set up an email list and try to interest people that way a few days before events that they might enjoy
  12. A few days back some 8.5 sailors were discussing how we should move the class forward. Leaving out the design restrictions, discussion covered how to encourage similar boats to come sailing more. There are several older GBE's and the likes floating around Auckland and elsewhere which could really add to the numbers. I thought I would ask my partner what she felt could improve things. About the only idea we collectively came up with was group cruises "in company". For us it's a tough call, as I am a racing sailor thru and thru, where she prefers the laid back relaxed type of sa
  13. Gotta agree there! We have a Pelin cherry 16 trailer yacht and the gbe. The annual cost of the cherry is a few hundred including fuel for the car, the gbe eats that just in routine maintenance. The fun quotient is similar in both, but for different reasons. Our family has outgrown the cherry (too many kids) but none of us want to sell it because some of the best racing around takes place in 16 footers. Plus we can take it on holiday for exploring inland waters.
  14. I heard recently that the $1.99 disinfectant from pak n save was as good as Wet n Forget for restoring the back deck at home. Then about a week later I heard the same thing from an unrelated source. So I tried it. I poured it on last week and sorta sloshed it around a bit with a broom. One week on and it's looking pretty good, I suspect another quick once-over and it'll look like new. I swear I could see a difference between the colouring this morning, and by tonight, after a full awesome spring day.
  15. I used a guy call Jamie, trading as Manic Marine. He seemed to really know his stuff, and was very reasonable with pricing. Google says he's still in Mangere but when I drove past his house a few weeks back it looked like he'd shut up shop. Might be worth a crack.
  16. If it's just 3p you want, you can buy it online from The Marina Store. Based in kerikeri marina but cover nz and worldwide
  17. Ha! Have to laugh at the irony really. The boat designer / builder that taught me how to build foils a few years ago proceeded to ditch the composites and now works solely with aluminium. Still designs and builds boats but no glass involved.
  18. Third party for FC is around $500 a year. For some reason even as third party it's about a hundred more than wood glass or steel. Underwritten by Lloyd's of London iirc.
  19. I'm getting sorted guys. I've got an aerospace engineer fixing the broken one and have bought a few tools to build a new set. Just have to save up the pennies for the materials. Thanks for the offers! Whio I'll pm you, I think Ken and I could both make use of that clamp thingy!
  20. True, but a one hour drive to the boat becomes a really long walk, even if I swap centerboards for skateboards. I don't do walking!
  21. Didn't feel a thing at home. Then again, living 100 yards from the NIMT railway line I'd be more worried if the house stopped moving.
  22. As each foil will cost more than a tidy secondhand car, I've decided to build my own. They won't be as light as the damaged set, but as anyone who has seen my car can tell you, that would be a better place to spend the money.
  23. wtf? nope, I've got more body than the guy in the picture, and more hot air than the story below it!
  24. I've just got estimates on a new board from Tim. I think I'll pass.
  25. Well that's interesting! My boards are being repaired by some people who should know how. I just want to tidy up that whole area, the inserts that I use at present look pretty amo' and leave a big hole at the hull/foil junction. That's a lot of excess drag. Although they probably saved us even more drama on Sunday. Now that I know that there is no "standard" board, I guess I'll have to do it the hard way. Build a blank and plane it down, one mm at a time.
